Default Yellowstone question

I am planning a trip to the Yellowstone River in mid July I will be floating from Livingstone down, I have never fished it and was wondering if anyone here has? I would love to know what to expect i.e. (hazards, experience needed,) and how many other people I can expect to see. I could care less about hooking hundreds of fish, however a little solitude would be great!! Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Sam

I have floated from Livingston to the Hwy 89 takeout several times. Only one real hazard in the stretch where there is a shelf/drop that takes up the left half of the river.

You will likely have plenty of company on the main channel but there are several side channels that can be walked to that do not see as much fishing pressure but either way expect company.

There are two ramps in Livingston, one at 10th street and one at the east end of town at Mayor's landing and also a launch upriver of Livingston at Carter bridge/East River road.

I would add that you won't escape the crowds on that section of river but it is a great float. Like said above, one hazard but it is pretty obvious. Alot of whitefish on that section too!

If you want solitude, you may have to hit up some of the private Spring Creeks or head into the park to the Lamar River. Watch out for Buffalo Bugs in the afternoon! They bite hard and make you bleed. Great time to be in Southern Montana.

I was attacked by a buffalo bug while sitting on my Harley. I had to jump in back of a guys truck who stopped to watch. If you bring your own gear, bring a 4 and a 6# rod. Be good at casting in the wind, thats what the 6# is for. My 5# XP worked great all summer, but I wished I had 4# and 6# rods instead.
