Default Steelies in the Deschutes?

I just moved to Idaho from Oregon and I'm coming back for a wedding in Portland. I wanted to stop and fish the Deschutes somewhere near I-84. Are the steelies in the river yet or are they a later summer run? If so, are there any decent stretches or favorite flies someone would care to share? If not, I'll fish for some redbands. Thanks for the info. Take care.

There are fish in the river and reports are poor. A buddy floated to the mouth last weekend and caught nothing. As far as good holes go, there are lots. Anywhere the fish would stack-up or stop to rest would be fine. I like to nymph fish for them with big trout flies not to be named. Some people do very well on undulating leaches.
Be sure and post a report.

I don't have a report, but I can give you a little advise on where and what. I have done well in the lover 5 miles of the river using flies like Max Canyon, Freight Train, Green Butt Skunk, and Egg Sucking Leeches. With 6000 a day coming over Bonny, and almost 2000 a day over the Dalles and John Day, there ought to be plenty of fish in the river. Maybe cooler temps wil help things out?

Good Luck!

I just finished a float of the lower D yesterday. Saw plenty of fish in the river, but not many happy fisherman. I managed to hook one around the 15 mile mark, but he didn't stay around long enough for photos. Had a couple of good takes that I missed because I was daydreaming.

Good luck,

Floated last weekend. It sucked. The weather was overcast and I was surprised not to catch fish. Sleds were ****ing me off all day...boogered up the side of my boat. Maybe next weekend.

fished the lower on monday but all I saw caught was a sage rod and a ross reel but it was pretty much trashed I think it was in the river for a long long time. Did manage to step on a buzz worm on the trail in!!! it put some holes in the waders but thats about it ,God im glad I wore them I was going to wade wet and changed my mind at the last second.
