Ways to improve the flies and lies section
As moderator of this section, I have taken a back seat to allow others to express their views and to help those seeking answers to questions.
I am off for the next couple of weeks to Hawaii with the wife. It is our 30th anniversary.
While I am gone, Pete has agreed to mod. Thanks in advance Pete.
To date, I have found almost no need to mod as the posters here, and I thank you, have been very professional in their posts and have shared information freely. The occasional items for sale that showed up here where moved to the appropriate section of the bb.
While I am gone I am asking for suggestions to improve this section of ifish and make it more informative.
I want to thank you for any help and suggestions.
Aloha...Giz...

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
Yeah, I posted them. Remember, those are property of Steelheader.net. But I have one posted. (well, they belong to my fly fishing area and the board, but I don't like to share).
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
I think we should all strive to spend more time fly fishing.
Have a good trip Giz, it's marlin time isn't it? That's what they told me while we were "boating" in March ... July & August.
I'm off to Vegas in a couple of days for our 20th anniversary. 30 years definitely deserves an island!

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
It's running good. The only thing I can think of to improve this site would be for all experienced Steelhead fly fishermen to e-mail me detailed diagrams of their favorite water, with detailed instructions on how they fish it.

Hello Gizmo, have a most excellant trip and DON'T drop that NON-waterproof camera .
For suggestions...
How about changing the name of this forum? The SaltyDogs have a respectable name, why not this forum?
Maybe "Iflyfish" or "Northwest Flyfishing"

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
How bout a 'fly of the week' or month or ? Or lake of the month or stream or ? With flies you could list the pattern and its uses, maybe some waters where its used a lot. With lake/streams could have short description of area with popular patterns used and techniques.

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
Leaving Wed. I like what I see. I will talk with Jennie about a new name for this section of we all want it, or most of us.
Garyk...you still have today and tomorrow to sell me that camera...I will go $32 just to show you that I am not as ridged as the seller....
Jerry, are you able to bring any of your excellent work here. I like what I saw there. If not, how many of you guys have digital cameras, not obsolete, underwater, 35 mm cameras that don't work for computer work...  that we can take turns showing our favorite flies of the season (which was discussed last month.)
Let me know and keep the ideas coming.
Giz...

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
Gizmo congrats on the 30th enjoy the trip and give us a good story when you come back.
Is there some reason why the fly fishing board needs up dating and improving?
Two schools of thought on a name change: 1)My dad-dont fix if it aint broke. 2)My Uncle-if yout tweak it here and there it might fly longer and faster.
Grantspastor- I need to be on the zipperlip honey hole email list as well, but make sure it it includes photos and landmarks, not just referencing the rock on the left or anything like that. All steelhead coho or chinook flyfishers should include with the email times and tide chart if applicable. That wouild improve this board from my point of view.

I've wondered about the name myself. How about the name "Ifly"?

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
Thanks Giz. Actually, no offense, but I do ALOT of work over there, especially on the tutorials. I try not to spread them everywhere. I may from time to time drop one over. But like I said, I don't like to share.
I did that as a favor. So hopefully may spark some of your guys to do it.

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
I think it is going great. I wouldn't object to a name change, however. I also like the idea of a fly of the month or something of the like. Congrats on 30 years Giz, maybe we will run into each other in St. Helens again next year! Aloha!

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
FLY OF THE MONTH!! I love that idea...as long as there's a picture included so we get the jist. Not everyone on here ties their own flies..or knows what the name for every fly is. I have a 72 year old friend who ties all my flies for me...clips the barb...so I can't do too much damage to the fishery  I always ask him...what's this one for ....."oh, steelhead...if that's what you are fishing for....or trout...if that's what you are fishing for. You never know what's going to hit your fly...just get it in the water and be ready!" I have managed to learn some of the names over the short bit of time that I've been fly fishing...normally by some other fisherman or woman who walks up and says "those are nice fish, what were you using??" I show them the fly and they say..."oh, a beaded nymph"...then I know what the heck I was floating!!!!!! Actually, there are so many sites that you can order flies from...I look through the catalog and see what's in my collection...compare...and then figure out the name.
About the name change?? I don't mind the current one...and gramps has always told me..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
I don't have a digital camera but with a little planning (like taking film in to get developed) I think I could pull off the following idea for Fly of the Month.
At the beginning of each month, the mod's start a fly of the month thread. Then we Ifliers post a picture of our fly of the month w/ a story. This does not have to be solely for fly tiers. Basically, each month we post our go to pattern for that time of year or season or water we are fishing - or we could post our "thinking out of the box" pattern we always wanted to try for that time of year but never the guts to do so. Whatever. The point is, we get a nice thread of everyone's favorite fly (and why) for that month - regardless or whether you tie them or not.

Re: Ways to improve the flies and lies section
TTT
OK: Back from Hawaii for the 30th then to Seaside this weekend for my 55th.
Now it's time for us to get your ideas off the drawing board.
Any other ideas, lets have them.
I will contact Jennie to see about the name change.
I see two sugguestions:
1. Iflyfish
2. Ifly
(I see the Northwest flyfishing but not sure if that will go).
Any other name sugguestions?
Giz...
