What Fly to use?
Hey all,
I am new to fly fishing and my 7 almost 8yr son wants to learn how to fly fish, so I have decieded to take him next week to the Canby pond and see if we can wet a line and maybe catch some thing.
Now to the main question. What would be a good fly pattern to get for this adventure? Like I said it will be the week of March 23 - 27 either in the early morning or late evening. All the help you can give will be great.
Thank you in advance.

Re: What Fly to use?
I don't have a solid answer but I plan to take my daughter down there next week and let her give it a try as well. I was thinkning of starting out with some nymphs and woolly buggers and keep moving intil something hits.
I've done well on the MO with nymphs, larger caddis flys, hoppers and adams'.
I also tied some black buzz bombs that work well on smallies in the evening. I'm not sure if those will be efective on the pond.
It'll be a fun experiment.

Small nymphs cast and allowed to sink a few second, then stripped in quick with a few pauses, they should slam it!!!

Size 8 black Wooly Bugger should be all you'll ever need for hatchery fish. It's also very effective about anywhere. Great beginner's fly.

Re: What Fly to use?
Usually small flashy nymphs work well, like a copper john or flashback.
Sometimes wooly bugger.
Or... sometimes a San Juan and allowed to let sink real slow.

Re: What Fly to use?
If you want some extra visual action, put a San Juan worm below a strike indicator.

a 5/32" extruded brownie Seriously, for laughs, some friends and I tied up brown 'egg patterns' and dubbed them "pellet flies"... they worked well. But as mentioned above, stick to small nymphs, bh pheasant tails, pheasant tail, prince nymphs, and hares ears, should all produce for you...
On the topic of pellet flies, did you know April V. uses corn flies for carp? ha ha... not gonna let her get away with that!

Re: What Fly to use?
Bead head Prince Nymphs are my #1 fly for trout. Bead head is the key. A little split shot to get it sinking and strip and pause. Use a long enough leader to enable it to get down a ways. Maybe even a sinking poly leader if it's deep enough.
