Default Deschutes Maupin area

Planning a quick trip over to the Maupin area on the 3/28. Been a while since fishing that area and would appreciate any suggestions. Areas to go, flies to fish, hatches to expect etc. I've been to the locked gate, upstream from town and hiked in from there. I also been downstream chukar hunting. Thanks in advance for any help!

Make sure you have and assortment of Blue Wing Olives and March Browns. I've seen a few small Stoneflies buzzing around but not to many. If you fish a stone nymph deep you will find some fish too. Also try small nymphs like pheasants, and RED copper johns if all else fails. Most of the hatches are from mid morning through mid day it seems. Good luck!

Google flyfishingdeschutes.

Give them a call and try to stop in when you're there. They'll give you the skinny. Not 100% sure they're fully open for the season yet.

what are the rules for hiking in passed locked gate? would you better walking in from harpin or from trout creek? are there any kind of passes that you would need to stay at the camp sites? any help would be nice. i have floated it on opening weekend but never hiked in. cant wait for this year!!

You need to be below the reservation line (dixon area). You can walk in above locked gate. You need to pay to camp but the rates (i believe) are reduced.

Good luck.

I'm not sure about permits for camping. We've hiked into the "club water" and as long as you sign the guest book you were entitled fishing privelages. That's as far as I've gone in (not very far).

You can hike upstream from Trout Creek -- all the way to Mecca Flat if you like -- and you don't need a permit to camp in the designated campsites. However, you can't hike downstream from Trout Creek, as there is a stretch of private property. And, more importantly, the fishing season in that part of the river -- the part that borders the Warm Springs Reservation -- is closed until the last Saturday in April.

Hiking in at the locked gate is a good option this time of year. I would look for soft water -- backeddies and slow water near the bank -- around midday for dryfly fishing to midges, blue winged olives and maybe -- just maybe -- March Browns.

The advice on nymph fishing in other posts is spot-on.

As stated, there's plenty of BWO activity. Last time I was out (a couple of weeks ago), there were several different caddis hatching as well. also, as stated, MB...if you can hit it right, that's one hatch you won't forget there (IF you can hit it right). There's lots of good water all along there (near Maupin). BWOs will probably start popping off around 12:30 or 1:00 and can continue for several hours (they come in waves)...just make sure you're near a slowish run (walking speed) that's not too deep and you'll be good to go.

cool cool thanks for your posts. i think what we are going to do is drive up thursday night camp some where below harpin and then of friday hike in and fish some of the water before the gate and past it untill the deadline. how far up from lock gate is the deadline, a mile or two? then we are going to camp at windy friday night and then hit up opening day on saturday.

i had another question about a fish that we hooked last year. i was walking this cut bank and saw a large fish cruising the bank going down stream, the fish had to be over 30' and i tried putting a large stimulator in from of him but he was moving way to fast. my buddy was fishing a couple hundred yards down from me and then hooked that fish. he had no idea what hit him and the fish took him out and then broke off. was that a steelhead trying to return or was it a bull trout?
