Default ? trolling flies for salmon in the salt

Trolling flies for salmon in the salt is becoming more popular every year.

I'm going to give it a couple of good days when the Silvers get around the bouy line at Grays Harbor.

Any Advice??

Thanx

When you are DRY FLY fishing in the rain are you really Dry Fly Fishing?

I asked pretty much this same question a few months ago. Here is the link to the responses:

As I thought, not much interest or knowledge on the subject.

Thanx for your input, I'll keep notes and share.

Heading out to just that this weekend....going to hook a couple with the diver/herring first and then load the fly road in the holder. If I got to I was going to just spin a herring if i couldn't find a pattern that I thought would work.

In MT I have trolled for trout usinga high density sink X-Super sink rate VI...LS8 and LS6 it will probably provide the least resistance if you use in down deep.

will post some results

I've trolled flies for coho in the Narrows off Campbell River BC...in August. The Canuck tackle stores sell coho flies which are large hooks with calftail wing/tail and red-wrapped shank. Long polar bear hair make the best ones but are unavailable commercially (I still have a stash of it). Any large, showy streamer would probably work when the coho are thick. We ran the boat fast...fast enough to create a good wake and skipped the flies in the turbulent foam only 20 to 30 feet back...or less. Somehow they can see the fly and when they hit, they hit hard  .

I just returned from a fly fishing coho trip off of Prince of Wales Island (Whale Pass) in Alaska. The flies we used were charteuse/white, pink/white and red/white bucktail streamers with lots of angel hair. The key to hook ups was either a fast troll or when we casting to the salmon, a fast strip and short pause retreive. Coho fishing here is excellent and the water is calm. Often we would see the coho finning on surface and you can see them take your fly.
