Default Fairbanks in September?

I will be visiting my son in Fairbanks from the last weekend in August through the first weekend in September. I think we will ride the train from Anchorage to Fairbanks, then have access to his vehicle around Fairbanks.

Anybody have any recommendations for fishing in the Fairbanks area?

We will probably stop at Talkeetna on the return, so I might buy the jet boat ride up to Spring Creek, which was full of chums in late August on my only other trip to Alaska several years ago.

I lived in Anchorage for 8 years...but never fished north of Talkeetna. Your time frame might be a little late for Chums...but could find some silvers. Since you are a fly fisherman...you might try fishing a "flesh" fly for trout where there are decaying salmon carcasses. As always in Ak...if you can drive to it, so can 10 million others....I can't remember the name of the creek...but it is the first one south of Montana Creek. Park and walk down to the mouth where it runs into the Big Susitna. I used to catch salmon there. Another place you might check out is the upper Deshka River (Kroto Creek). You can access it from the Petersville Road off the Parks Hwy. It isn't (or wasn't) much of a road, but it runs into the bush about thirty miles or so off the highway. Good luck!

Since you're riding the train...a possibility would be to have them drop you off along the tracks somewhere. They used to do that...don't know if they still do, but could be a way to get into the bush without additional expense of an aircraft.
