I don't know what the counts are over Winchester Dam. In the odd year I've done really well in the last week of June, but lower down. I usually boat from Colliding Rivers to Whistler's Bend. If you can manage to hit the river on an overcast day, that's when I've done best. Otherwise I've had my best success on flies early and late when the sun is off the water. It's one of the most beautiful rivers in the world isn't it?

Default Another Gorgeous River Report

I fished the North Fork Umpqua Friday evening and Saturday morning. It was very clear and lovely. Maybe the next time I try it will also be full of steelhead and I can give a more interesting fishing report instead of a travelogue.

I fished hard at a lot of the pull-outs and waysides from the flyfishing deadline up toward Steamboat. There were some other flyfishers, so at least some other people were also expecting to find fish. But I did not see anyone with a fish on.

I did successfully train a lot of smolts to hit the Freight Train at the bottom of the swing. I hope they remember the lesson in about three years.
