Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Gizmo Man and I have talked about doing an informal fly-fishing get together on the Deschutes this summer. No biggie maybe just walk up from the mouth and fish our way down then have a BBQ at the State Park. Weekends are tough because of the crowds so I'm thinking maybe those that can could do a mid-week thing.
What do you guys think?
I'll be doing several trips up from the mouth... my aching back permitting, this summer.

Good idea. I could probably tie into this - won't know for sure until the night before ...

I live within 25 minutes of the mouth of the deshutes and would love to hook up with some guys for a hike/fish. Mondays are great! Put me in!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Like I said it will be very informal. I will be fishing Tuesdays and Wednesdays with my son this year. We walk up from the mouth, usually on the eastr side but occasionally on the west side. We plan on starting late in July.

Stew - are you planning out and backs or do you stay over? If you are out and back, maybe we could hook up sometime.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
I am a little further up when I go but am interested in the fellowship. Tuesdays through Thursdays in the evening are my shot.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Last year we hiked in and out after the evening fishing. We'll be doing the same this year too but my son and I are planning a few stay overs in the campground at the mouth.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Great idea! I'd love to get in on this as well. I've found that week days are MUCH less crowded. But if you have a problem with midweek, ummm don't go. Keep me posted. I'll take a vacation day with enough notice. Or mabee float down and stash a pontoon boat in the weeds and walk up with y'all. Hmmm the options are endless.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
For guys not familiar with the Deschutes 15-30 guys might not sound like many but it really is quite a few. I didn't have any real crowded days last year. We seemed to have plenty of room to fish most of the time except for this one time....
Lots of guys complain about how gear fishermen will "camp out" in one hole for hours while fly guys try to move through. Last summer my son and I were following proper etiquette by taking our place upstream from guys working the stretch we wanted to fish as all were moving down.
One guy was working the run downstream from my son who was about 50 yards above this guy.
The guy finishes and instead of going above me he steps right in front of my son......
So just to remind you that poor manners isn't exclusive to gear or bait fishers.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
This sounds like a great idea. It seems like there are enough people interested in this to possibly set up a carpool for those wanting to go during the week for a day or for an evening. I always believe in more the merrier!

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Stew..
Just my opinion but when i get cut off by a "camper" I just keep fishing down and get closer and closer till our lines get tangled up.. they usually get the hint and leave after that. if not I keep fishing down. If they won't move I wade past them and start IMMEDIATLY!!!! below them, like a spey rod length away.. anything happens to them it's their own fault and i typically use 1/0's.
These guys know that what they are doing is bad and rude and do it anyway.. there are hardly any ignotant people up there just idiots.. you can tell the ignorant people cause they have yellow spinning tods and no waders.. Ignotance can be taught but being a selfish idiot can't.. I'll take a boatload of ignorant people any day
This is all of course why I rarely fiah the Deschutes anymore.. Mid-late July only..

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Good points Rob.. In the last 3-5 years, "campers" have become common place on the Deschutes. There has been many shouting matches and a few fist fights because of it. There are plenty of fish for everyone, so share the water.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
RA - "You can tell the ignorant people because they have yellow spinning rods and no waders" give me a break man. Nice way to perpetuate the stereo type of fly fishers being eliteist, snobbish gear heads. I mean, campers chap me as much as you, on any river but we cant all afford custom spey rods and Simms guide waders, some of us dont get a "Pro Deal".

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Good points Rob. Last summer the incident I posted about was the only real probelm we had....with the exception of guys camping in a hole. I guess I just figure they were there first and although I don't like it it's just the way it is.
With more people fishing for fewer fish this is something that we will have to deal with more and more. You would think common sense would figure into the equation somewhere along the line but sadly it doesn't.

Re: Are you ready for the Deschutes?
Stew, it's not the nature of people to use common sence or even common courtesy when it goes agaist their desires..
