Default Coastal summer steelhead to a fly

The Wilson river fish are tough to move for a fly but I've managed a few in the last year. What fly do you other coastal fly fishers use? Do you find your fish in the faster riffles or deeper runs. Floatong or sink tip?

A number of flies will work...many in fact. I think selecting the water to fish is more important than the fly. You can't go wrong with a size 6 Green Butt Skunk. If you have a drift boat, try laying the fly line out in front of the boat about 40 feet and fish the fly just like you would fish a plug. We catch hundreds on the Rogue that way. I use a floating line. The fish will come up several feet to take the fly...and boy do they take it! The fly only has to be a few inches under the surface. I've even had then take a waking fly. Fish them with just as much confidence as you have inother methods. There are times and days when flies are the #1 producing method. In the middle of the summer, my best succes by far has come when the sun is not on the water (early and late)

muddler minnow or a lightly dressed spey fly(purple or black)I usually use a type 3 on the wilson if the water level is 2.5 or higher. Otherwise i use a floating line.
good luck.
