Tillimook bay area trout?
Can anybody point me to some resources on fishing the Tillamook bay rivers for trout?
Yes, I know that these are well known for Salmon and Steelhead, and yes I know that for the most part, the cutthroats are small, but I'd like to get some more info if possible to knock a few degrees off the slope of the learning curve.
I've read the Northwest section of "Fishing In Oregon" several times over, but regarding the Wilson, Trask, Kilchis rivers, the coverage is mostly about the Salmon and Steelhead.
I'm not looking for your secret little trout spot (well, actually I guess I am, but I understand if you don't want to tell me...) but would welcome any information along these lines. I'm just trying to find out where I should go and what I should do when I can get a free afternoon to sneak away to a stream.
Regards,
Kurt

I had always heard the there was some awesome trout fishing on the little streams that flow into the wilson river. I also know the nestucca has some really nice trout in it.

It's not a stream, but Cape Mears Lake is good from the bank or a float tube.

A very good question! I think you will find that all the coast streams harbor little in the way of trout action in the summer. (yes, there are some stickarounds for sure!)But most go to the Bay and come back in the fall and winter as searuns. then you can use some honkin flies with honkin colors to catch some honkin fish! In the meantime the area lakes can be pretty darn good for BASS AND trout! (ie Hebo, Towne, Lytle, etc)

There are a ton of pull outs along the upper wilson. Pull off and fish! I think Jones Camp is the big camp ground, there are two day use areas there that you can park in. Use dries and if that does not work use a dropper nymph.

Re: Tillimook bay area trout?
Kurt if you do fish for trout in the coastal streams that are known for steelhead and salmon you will kill many of them for every trout you catch if you are not careful. Please use small barbless hooks and release carefully. As you know the stream levels in the summer get very low and the fish are stressed without us humans distrubing them. Smolts are agressive predators and tend to take a hook deeply.
Think fall trout fishing when the Cutthroats are returning, "harvest" trout as they are sometimes called.
There was a book published several years ago I think it was somethng like "An anglers Astoria",(Dave Hughes, author?) or some such, Amato publications might have a copy, which could point you in the right direction.

Re: Tillimook bay area trout?
Thanks for the replies. I have been fishing the Trask and Wilson for the past two weeks. The best I've done so far is a 10+ incher. I know this is not trophy water, but I just prefer rivers over lakes and these rivers are close. I did have what looked like a 12 incher attack my fly yesterday, but I missed him - I also a pod of Salmon holding in a pool, but they just kind of chuckled at me.
Edsr - I'm careful with the fish, and have yet to meet a fly fisherman who didn't use barbless hooks (though I'm sure they are out there.) Actually, I'm not that great a fisherman and attaching the fish to the end of my line is somewhat the execption to the rule.

Luse - send me an e-mail if you want to hook up. I've been meaning to hit the Wilson this summer while there is still water in it. Mondays and Thursdays usually work best, though I am pretty flexible. ~ lnf

I've been having fun with the cutts here at Jennie's place. Barbless is the only way to go! I've been using #14 red or yellow Humpys fished dry and they have been hitting them almost as soon as they hit the water. Nothing big but still alot of fun
