Default Hexagenia hatches

Well, next month the big yellow bugs will be coming out of the water right at dark and after. For anybody who hasn't been present for one of these hatches they are pretty neat. They generally happen in July. I've seen a scattering of them as late as

I've been going to Merril Lake in Washington, but I would like to find some good ones here in Oregon. I know about Lost Lake by Hood River. And have not checked that one out, that lake gets really crowded. It seems like there ought to be some at Hagg Lake or on the coast. Or other lakes in the Cascades. Does anyone know ? Just checking.

Unfortunately, there's no trout, but the various lakes on Sauvies Island - like Sturgeon Lk. - see a Hex hatch in late July into August.

Hey Jakeob!
Why not check with the entymology folks at Oregon State University or Portland State or even NW Flyfishing Outfitters across town may have a few suggestions. Seems to me that Laurence aught to be a good prospect, but....this needs research!
Keep us posted!

Hey garyk,
Some years ago I was in Florida going for a boat ride with my sis and her hubby. There was a hatch of the biggest olive mayflies I've ever seen. Well ,the bass keyed on them just like the trout do. It was pretty awsome.

So here are some questions about Sauvies' Island. Is the bass fishing good over there and is the water clean enough to fish out of a pontoon boat? What do You think?

Jacob, Horseshoe lake in Woodland WA has also has the big hex hatch. Unfortunatly the brown's and rainbows are small but still fun to catch. I hoppe to try a few morre lakes in SW WA this year.

Jacob, just saw your questions: "So here are some questions about Sauvies' Island. Is the bass fishing good over there and is the water clean enough to fish out of a pontoon boat? What do You think?"

I think the bass fishing is better in the Mult.Channel and you could use a pontoon there as long as the current's not ripping - and it shouldn't be but consult the tidebook.

The a couple exceptions, the lakes on the island are ruined by carp who keep the mud stirred up and the water turbid. But there are still those Hex's that come off in the summer. I recall seeing them when the corn is fully grown, so it must be like late July.
