Default tilt tube replacement question

I've got an 89' Johnson 90 hp that runs like a champ. Had a problem with tight steering, so today I replaced the steering cable. While I was at it, I tried to clean up the tilt tube a bit. It is original to the motor, plain old steel, and rusted up pretty bad.

I'd like to replace it with a new stainless tube, and I've found them online for $70. It turns freely inside the motor brackets when the nuts are loose, so it should be a pretty straightforward replacement. Problem is, I don't have a hoist to support the weight of the motor while taking it out.

Anyone know about of a place where I might be able to rent some time with a hoist? Or a good boat shop that could replace it for me for a reasonable price?

You can take a Long, course, Rat-Tail file and scrap out the inside of the tilt tube. I do this on my non-Johnson motor when I clean and tube the steering... works good.

Regarding hoisting the engine, have you called a Johnson dealer - what do they recommend? There might be a place to lift the motor with an engine hoist, which can be rented.

If you replace the tilt tube, you may have washers or shims that need replacing.

Poor-man's outboard "hoist."
  1. Crank the tongue of the trailer as low as it will go.
  2. Lower the motor all the way down.
  3. Crank the tongue of the trailer until the skeg of the motor is resting on the ground.
  4. Engine weight is supported, but you'll have to use ropes or boards to keep it from tipping.
