Flies for the D
I am heading up to the Deschutes in about 10 days and was wondering what flies I need to have.
What would be 10 flies in your box???

Never hurts to have some bead head Prince nymphs either.

Re: Flies for the D
For a stone hatch in the evening--mucho stimulators/stones and elk hair caddis.

Re: Flies for the D
My year round go to is a size 16 Pheasant Tail nymph. Wouldn't be caught dead without a half dozen in my box. Of course everyone will be focusing on adult salmonflies this time of year. Expect the mad rush over there. Still early above Maupin tho, so make sure you can fish the bottom.

Re: Flies for the D
D3, you'll likely find yourself in the heat of the salmon flies, as mentioned above, which is a great experience. On the D there is almost always a caddis hatch in evening, from May to Sept. I would suggest carrying some in size 14-18, in varying shades from dark to light. Also, emergers are a great call in the day if you can locate any slurpers near the banks, which you usually can.
As for nymphs, Prince Nymphs, as mentioned above and small beadheads have always worked well for me.

Re: Flies for the D
Thanks for all the replies guys. Please do keep them coming if you have any other advice for me.
It has been awhile since i have been there. Are there any significant changes on the river regarding access or change in the flow? I am thinking that I'll probably park at the Deschutes club gate and walk in, fishing that stretch but I really dont know. I am going to make sure that I am there mid-week to avoid the huge crowds, although I am sure that there will be plenty of people. Any reccomendations of places to go? If you dont want to say here please e-mail me... dssmart@pepperdine.edu
Thanks again guys. I really appreciate it.

Re: Flies for the D
Tie a dropper about 3ft. behind your stimulator with that bead head Prince stuck on it. 'Nuff said.....

Re: Flies for the D
When the sun first hits the water in the morning, I keep my eye peeled for sulphers. They're never thick, but when they show, they are worth a shot. They must taste like candy, cuz they get more attention than their numbers would suggest.
