It's almost time
Well folks the Shad are starting to nose around the falls how many of you out there are going to be trying it out with the fly rod this year. I know I will I have been tying chartreuse clousers and some other streamer patterns that might just do the Job so am I alone in this venture or are there others out there fly fishing for shad. I would love the shot to try it from a boat but am a bank bound fly fisher for now. Good luck everyone

Best flies for shad are tied sparse. Just a little gold ribbing and some crystal flash on a long shank gold hook will do the trick. Trust me...it's a killer. A sink tip is a must if you're fishing current.

Re: It's almost time
Ryan,
I have a boat(16' Flyfish Clack) but have never gone after shad but would like to do it. I have a relative that fishes for them all the time in Sacramento and says they are a great fish. I'll provide the boat if you can show me some tips. Email me to arrange...

Re: It's almost time
I have ff for shad up at the deadline the last 2 years with Roy (BOE). I used a 7 wt flyrod, 10' with a sink tip. We fish the current line and caught so many that you would not believe it. One afternoon we put 103 in the boat in about 4 hrs. Don't know how many we lost.
I was using a size 6 hook with green beads with some crystal flash.
Let me know if I can help out.

I have only fished out of a boat, just below the falls. Other then Clackamette park, would anyone share other bank spots? I have heard of a super spot on the columbia someplace up river of the fishery but am not sure where it is.

Re: It's almost time
from a boat how are you presenting the fly? Just holding it below you in the current? or swinging it?

Re: It's almost time
from the boat i would think eather one would work i think just hodling it down deep in the current would be just as efective as drifing the current

Re: It's almost time
I fish from a boat. We anchor on the current seam and I cast up into the current and follow the line around. If I need, I either feed line or retrieve it to keep the bow out of the line. The fish stop the fly and then make their runs and jumps. A realllll kick in the pants....
Must try for those who want to sharpen their fly fishing skills. Lots of willing biters. And all from 2 to 6 pounds.
