Fly fishing get together
Anyone open to doing something like this? Maybe for trout at some lake that can be float tubed or something. Any ideas?

Re: Fly fishing get together
Sorry Stew, but you aren't getting off that easy. Getting together is a great idea... YOUR idea. Where and when? How about mid-May (I'll be back from Florida by then). As for the where of it, I have zero experience with Oregon lakes so lead on.

Re: Fly fishing get together
I'm game, taking a break from springer fishing and getting back into tossing a fly would be great. Century lakes would be fun, or a lake like
badger, on mt hood, although it's a 4x4 to get there. I've got extra floating devices for some guys if this comes together. Any weekend day till about mid june, then it's a vigil till my boy is born. Gotta stay close to home just in case he comes early.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Badger is good. One near is a challenge but Jean/Jack is hot early and late. Also, I would propose one after the opener two or three weeks. I know plenty. We could camp over if necessary.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Well what do you guys think? Here are some options. I'm thinking float tubes or pontoons on a lake somewhere.
Hosmer Lake
East Lake or Paulina Lake
Lava lake
Timothy lake
or
The Deschutes

Re: Fly fishing get together
the D would be fun, we'd have enough cars to run shuttles, but not sure if alot of guys have boats.
Shore trip would'nt allow us to socialize much.
Still think Badger would be a good possibility, not too many guys on the lake, big enough to hold some of us, and the trout are always hungry there. Road is a little rough going in though.
Century lakes, hosmer or davis gets my vote. Davis may be low but if not it's a blast to fish.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Anyone ever fish Laurance Lake out of Hood River?
I fish it alot and there are some nice trout in there and lots of them. Never caught anything over 16 inches but there has to be some in there. I have had 100 + fish days there Flyfishing this time of year. No bait allowed either so the lake never gets real crowded.
Hosmer would be a blast but is real tough to fish, you really need to know your stuff to consistently produce there. Century Drive lakes are a long ways to go for a lot of us.

Re: Fly fishing get together
I could take 2 in my driftboat. However, you can't fish from a boat on the Deschutes anyway so it's like banking it either way. It would be fun if we had a couple boats though. Warm Springs to Trout Creek is easy and fun.

Re: Fly fishing get together
I want to get together with a group and go to to Mann Lake.
Man Lake?
I don't know, but I've heard tremendous things about it.
You stay in a little motel not far from there.
Even if it doesn't happen with this get together... what about it? Anyone interested in going with me?

Tanner, Laurence sounds good to me. Email me with more details, I'd like to try that place out sometime. Is it a 4x4 road into it? do you float tube or pontoon fish it.
Thanks

After talking to Tanner on the phone today Laurence sounds good!
Jennie, where is Mann Lake?
The Century Drive Lakes are a long ways away and Hosmer is a tough place to get results.
I would like to hit the Deschutes for the Salmon fly hatch.....Pete?

Jennie,
Mann Lake is 2 hours past the middle of nowhere. The closest hotel that I know of is at least an hour away. Big fish but extremely remote.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Last time I drove to Mann Lake it took me a solid 8 hours. It is aproximately 60 miles from the Oregon Nevada border. It is a great lake but the wind gets so bad that we used to plan a 4 day trip there knowing we would get to fish for 1 maybe two if we were lucky. The first time we went there some guy's top-heavy cab over motorhome was actually tipped over by the wind while it was parked. The wind there makes a bad day in the gorge look like a summer breeze. No Joke.
Mann has (or had) a good population of Lahontan Cutthroat in it. Average fish when I used to go there was 16" my personal best was 24". My two main go to flies were a size 18 bead head pheaant tail and a size 18 beadhead yellow scud. The lake has some huge Chirominid hatches and fishing can be fast and furious if you have the right fly. One day we were there I spent about 3 hours hooking fish every single cast by just wading out 15 feet from the bank right in front of our camp. My two buddies saw what was going on and came out one on each side of me. I gave them each the same fly that I was using and while I proceeded to hook several more fish, they cast at rings and continually had their offerings refused.
After the bite died we went back to shore and I examined their flies to figure out what was making the difference. My fly had a copper bead head while theirs were gold. That is how picky those fish are. When you see how much bug life is in this lake you will understand why they are so picky. It makes Crane Prarie look barren.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Laurance Lake is just south of Hood River. About 1 1/2 hours from Portland. It is not to far from the small town of Parkdale.
It has stocked and native rainbows, cutthroat and cuttbows along with a few bull trout. It is 104 acres and has some pretty deep spots but also a lot of scholls that make for some good fly fishing. No gas motors are allowed but electric motors are OK. There is a no bait rule on the lake which makes it nice for flyfishers.
Pontoon boats are ideal for this lake but float tubes work good also, I have used both here. Unless they have finished the road construction by the lake, the float tubers will probably want to walk their tubes and gear to the far end of the lake.
The road into the lake is fine for two wheel drive vehicles.
Good flies for this lake are:
1.Olive, yellow, lite brown soft hackles 14,16,18
2.Bead Head Hares Ears 12,14,16
3.Prince Nymphs 12,14,16
4.Wooly Buggers (Duh) - Olive, black 10,12
5.Pheasant tails - 16,18
6.Carey Special or other damselfly and dragonfly
patterns
This would be a good place for a get together like this. There is a campground there with fascilities, the fishing is good and fairly easy and it is not too far from Portland. The one thing to keep in mind with fishing any of the larger lakes is it can get pretty windy sometimes.
Late May early June might be a good bet as the winds tend to start calming down up there then.
If that isn't agreeable to everyone some other suggestions would be.
Clear Lake - Mt. Hood
Timothy Lake - Mt. Hood
Rock Creek reservoir - Wamic
Badger Lake (real ugly road getting in)- Wamic

Re: Fly fishing get together
Laurance sounds like a great choice - relatively close, accessible, campable, has fish, and Tanner can supply the flies. With my old Landcruiser and trailer I can haul my pontoon boat and another or float tubes or whatever and a few ifishers and gear and beer.
Stew - you got this puppy rollin so why don't you pick a date and we can all get busy daydreaming 'til then.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Laurence gets my vote, all the right conditions for a get together. Some sat or sunday late may or first weekend in june for good fishing.
I own 2 pontoons and a flaot tube, so I can offer something to another guy to two if needed.
I'm stoked!

Re: Fly fishing get together
I've been looking for something like this to get my dad into fly fishing again. He has two float tubes that haven't even seen water yet! Jennie, about Manns lake.
This from Oregonlive.com....Fishing Forum:
The fishing is slow. WAY OVER-FISHED for the past 3-4 yrs. Also, the darn lake is almost dry. Will be dry this summer. Dont waste your time this year. It will be years before we can expect any GOOD fishing at MANNS LAKE (proper name).
I'll keep my eyes on this post if you don't mind a guy you don't know and his pops hanging with you!

Fisherfield...According to ODOT, US Geological Survey, Topozone.com, etc it is MANN Lake. What's your source? I also have heard that it's going dry. Perhaps it'll be better managed in the future.

Sounds to me that there is enough bank access to make those with out a tube or pontoon happy.

Re: Fly fishing get together
Very unlikely that it will still be snowed in by June 6th. As far as fishing it off of the bank, thats a tough one. There are a couple areas where you could do this but you would be pretty confined.
