Hunting general hunt with draw tag
I think I know the answer to this, but could not find a confirmation in the regs.
Can you hunt a general season/unit if you draw and purchase a draw tag? Example: Put in, draw and purchase a spike tag. Then during the same season of course use this tag to hunt in a general any bull unit?
I think the answer is yes, but just can't find it in the regs.

Re: Hunting general hunt with draw tag
Actually i think the answer is no depending on the species and unit, if you draw a tag you are limited to that tags area, there are a few tags that turn into general tags if they are not filled like the high cascades deer tag, but a draw tag does not equal a general tag, page 10 of the big game regs should help you out.

Re: Hunting general hunt with draw tag
I had to edit my post, I didn't read what you were asking closly enough. A general season tag, like a draw tag, has a specific date and area. Controlled hunts are typically by unit, which is the boundry that the tag is good for. If you draw and purchase a Mt Emily spike tag, that tag is only valid in the Mt Emily unit. The regulations describe the exact boundry that a tag is valid in. You can purchase only one tag per series, so you are limited to that boundry. One exception is archery controlled tags, from the regulations (page 79):
Successful applicants will receive one tag valid for both the general elk bowhunting season and a controlled bow season.

I know that you can use the Chesnumunis archery elk tag in any otc units and during the late cow season if it's unfilled. i've had this tag a few times and have used it in other units. I had a state tropper check me during the late season cow tag and he called in to make sure it was legal and I got the ok.. i knew it was because i called odfw before i used it because i hunt in a few different units during the season.

I'm thinking if it's a draw tag, that's a tag only for that unit.
Ex: You draw a spike tag, 1st season for Heppner unit. You cannot use that tag for the 2nd season.
But I'm thinking he's talking archery.

I know you can't hunt a diff. season, but I think you can hunt the same season in a general unit. Using your example, if I drew a heppner 1st season spike tag I think I could use that tag in the white river unit first season, but I may be wrong.

Re: Hunting general hunt with draw tag
Think I found the info in the regs in a table. Notice that the general seasons only specifiy that you must have a tag for that season. Bow Tag, First season tag, or second season tag. It is only the controlled hunts that specify that you must have a specific tag.
General Bowhunting — Elk Bow Tag
General Rocky Mt Elk Centerfire Firearm First Season Rocky Mt Elk - First Season Tag
General Rocky Mt Elk Centerfire Firearm Second Season Rocky Mt Elk - Second Season Tag
Controlled Elk Centerfire Firearm, Muzzleloader,
or Bow (200 series) Controlled 200 Series Elk Tag

Re: Hunting general hunt with draw tag
I asked odfw about this last year for the elk rifle hunts. I had drawn a tag, so I could either buy the tag I drew or a general season tag, not both. They said whichever I purchase first is all I get. ODFW computer is programmed so it won't issue you both as I understand it.

Based on that example, you could NOT draw a 1st season Heppner spike and use it in WR unit 1st season.
But, you could buy a 2nd season spike tag and hunt in quite a few different units.

I agree with huntercgr. Though there are a few exceptions, a Controlled Hunt tag from one unit cannot be used in another unit, even if the season dates and bag limit are the same. And to hunt, for example, in the General Rocky Mountain Elk Second Season, you have to have a General Rocky Mountain Elk Second Season tag.
Here's the general regulation covering tags (page 9).
To hunt big game you must have in possession a valid hunting license and a big game tag valid for the dates, area and species
being hunted.
Here's some exceptions in the Regs. There may be more:
Page 50
HUNT 119A: W High Cascade - 100% public lands. Successful applicants will receive one tag valid for both the W High Cascade hunt and Western Oregon General Deer Rifle season. Hunters who harvest a deer in the W High Cascade hunt may not hunt in the Western Oregon General Deer Rifle season.
Page 52
Successful applicants for 168R1 will receive one tag valid for the controlled hunt and general deer bow season.
Page 79 CONTROLLED 200 SERIES ELK BOW HUNTS
NOTE: Successful applicants will receive one tag valid for both the general elk bowhunting season and a controlled bow season. Do not purchase a general season bow tag if you are successful in the controlled hunt draw. Tags must be purchased by the day before the earliest hunt begins. Hunters who harvest an elk during the general bowhunting season may not hunt in the controlled bow season. You can harvest only one elk per year.
