Pinkfin Surfperch... info needed Please!
I'll admit it, I'm not the best fisherman in the world but have a lot of fun doing it and I catch a fair share. However, my fair share is not enough to keep my 7 year old son interested in trolling for Salmon (I have a NR 22 ft Seahawk) or sitting and waiting for sturgeon to bite. I am therefore wishing to learn the where's and whens and hows of catching surfperch, preferably in Winchester and Charleston and Florence. I think that would be fun for him and keep his interest piqued until he learns the virtue of patience.
Any tips or info out there?
Appreciate it!
Kurt

I was down there two years ago on Father's Day and did well-24 fish between three of us.
Last year we were down a few weeks earlier and struck out. We were told then that the high tide was best, when the year before the turn of low tide to incoming was the hot ticket.
Bait-sandshrimp, multiple hooks
Good luck. The bait shops will help you too.

I used to fish off the jetties at Newport and off the rocks around Yachats for surfperch, greenling, rock fish, sea bass, etc.
Using multiple hooks like White Water Fisher said is very effective. I believe you can use up to three.
When my dad and I fish off the rocks now, we use old spark plugs for a weight, and mussels or sandshrimp for bait, cast it out in the ocean, let it bounce all around, and wait for a bite. We've caught some nice fish this way.

When the perch are running put in at the airport ramp and fish under/around the North Bend bridge. It's also a good place to throw your crab rings, just make sure you don't drop them to close to the channel, I've lost several that way....it gets deep in a hurry. Anyway, for the perch, as stated above, sandshrimp and multiple hooks, the great thing about that area is you just may hook something bigger too! I've seen some pretty big ling cod taken from under the train trestle as well.
If you don't want to take the boat, then go down below the bridge for Haynes Inlet and cast from shore, just look for the cars and follow the trail down.
It's been a long time since I have fished for these but it sure used to be fun.
Good luck!
Scott

Re: Pinkfin Surfperch... info needed Please!
I will be in Yachats this weekend on a romantic weekend with my honey. I am going to sneak some gear along and was thinking of fishing off the rocks in front of the Adobe resort..(pretty romantic huh) Does anyone know if its legal to fish there and what catch restrictions there might be? I could just do the C and R thing but it would be cool to bring some fish home for Sunday dinner.

h20Dog,
My advice is to fish on the other side of the yachats river, off those rocks (I think the road to those rocks is called Yachats Access Road). Much better fishing. Consult the regulations for any restrictions, but I believe you can keep either 5 or 10 a day (combined bottom fish). They taste great if you fry them up for fish and chips!
