Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
I have a few goals for myself for this coming year and am curious if any of you guys/gals also have a list of things that you would like to accomplish?

Catch anything on a fly especially chinook and steelhead. Been almost 2 years since I've caught anything on a fly rod. very sad.

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
I want to start it off by hitting the salmonfly hatch on the D., then venture off to Idaho and check out some of the streams over there (Henry's Fork and the Salmon)

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
I don't usually set a goal for fishing, but I did this year: to fish part or all of at least 52 days. Haven't accomplished that since '01 and I'm a lesser man of it! I think I've been out 7 times so far........

I dont think I'll set a goal this year. Last years goal was to fish 100 days. The couch just isn't that comfortable.

I set a goal to catch as many species on a fly this year as I can, so far this year just whitefish.

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
I guess I should post mine;
1. Land a steelhead on the swung fly!
2. Expand the list of rivers that i have fished (hopefully add the north umpqua , north santiam, and one of the portland area rivers)
3. Fish the Salmonfly hatch on the Deschutes
4. Get a spey setup
5. Go out lake fishing for trout in some of the central oregon area lakes.

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
I caught my first Steelhead last year on gear, so my goal this year is to hook one on the fly rod!!!
The journey starts tomorrow...

I did this two summers ago in the Florida Keys. I definitely did not realize how hard these fish are to catch. I would practice casting long distances before the trip. I thought I was decent at casting, but the Bonefish really humbled me in the wind. Good luck though! It was a blast and I can not wait to do it again.

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
Catch a steelhead every month of the year on a swung fly in Oregon. I already botched this year, but I'll see how many months I can get and hopefully improve next year.

Well, how about 100 Salmon on the fly (Coho and Chinook only and in Washington & Oregon exclusively). It’s doable, just a lot of work. I've been close a couple times...

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
My goals are:
1) To catch an albacore on a CAST fly, - and then catch a bunch for the freezer any way I can. Any one brave enough to set up another charter after last year's disappointing, yet "adventurous", trip?
2) Catch at least a few summer runs on flies since I've apparently forgotten how.
3) Maybe catch a springer or two on flies (it's been a while).
4) Actually flyfish for trout again.
5) Finally catch a surfperch on the fly.

bobber dance,
Belize rocks, you won't regret going! Bonefish will be easy to scratch off the list, - at least small ones anyway. The hardest part for me to learn (or unlearn) was to not set the hook with bones. Just keep stripping until they are on. I missed several (including the biggest) when I watched the fish come up behind the fly, inhale it, and I couldn't help tightening up when I felt the take.
Summer is big tarpon time so take a 12wt and tie up some Black Deaths in at least 4/0. The one day we went for tarpon my guide, Tomas, looked thru my box and was dissappointed I didn't have anything larger than a 2/0. He was happy though when the "Death Bunny" (my version of a BD) he picked out was tied on a circle hook. The 90lber that ate it, hooked itself and was on for a solid 10 minutes of heavy pressure before the pathetically small hook pulled out .
As for permit, all I can say is I at least saw one (20 feet further than I could cast and moving the wrong way). The other guests that were targeting permit were running pretty far south to get to the best spots.
One fish I think is overlooked down there is Barracuda. I managed to catch a few small ones, but saw plenty of big ones cruising the flats. Kind of hard to concentrate on 2-3lb bonefish when there's a 3' cuda swimming 40 feet away.
Feel free to PM me if you want to know more.

Finish repairing a boat that was given to me and go after my first springer! Then would like to catch my first steelhead on a fly.

Re: Fishing Goals for 2009 (and beyond)
My first Steelhead would nice preferably a winter...but that is looking slim now. I'd like to fill up my Salmon/Steelhead tag section for the first time too.
Tuna fishing for the first time would be great too.
