Default cougar kill, story of the bullets

when i disassembled the cougar i found the 3 bullets used. first 64gr power point, entered at throat face on. penetrated outside ribcage under front shoulder to middle of cat. found intact. second shot WAS at 15yds point blank, bullet entered chest exploded heart lodged in offside shoulder intact. cat jumped up and ran about 60yds with no heart, next shot on the run, hit spine behind front shoulders and rolled cat. this last bullet had zero blood around it, even though it exploded on spine. found it in pieces in backstrap. cat had no blood pressure with last shot so i only found this wound channel by cutting out back strap. even with no heart the cat was making good speed for seconds, i'm guessing about 4 seconds at a run.

That sounds exciting! What caliber of gun and what kind of bullets were you using? Did you call him in?

My cousin shot his buck this year with a 180 grain power point from his .30-06, at about 50 yards the bullet went through both lungs, the heart and put 2 nice holes in the ribcage. We recovered it from the hide on the other side and it was a near perfect mushroom. It actually punched a hole in the far side of the hide but didn't exit, it was really weird. For a "non-premium" bullet it performed very well. I'm thinking about shooting them in my new .308

The first elk i shot, i put a .30-06 bullet clean through the heart. She ran probably a good 3 seconds before my second bullet did exactly what the third in that cat did. We found my second bullet in pieces next to the bone. Lost a little meat with that second shot, but none of it to blood shot. It is pretty amazing how tough elk are. I guess it sounds like cats can be just a tough...

It is pretty weird to see a bullet wound without any blood around it...

What no picture of the cat and the damaged bullets? How far away did you first see this cat? I mean 15yds sounds a little to close to me. I am pretty sure you are a better shot at a longer distance.

Congrats on the cougar!
