Default Secret River

Was going to get up early fishing Saturday and get some crab wire at Newport, but ended up sleeping in, so I went to Newport first. On the way I stopped and pumped some sand shrimp(yes, I have a shellfish license too!). Got the wire and headed to the Secret River on the way home to Keizer. Started fishing about noon, on the fifth cast, fish-on. After I got the rod tip unstuck from the overhead tree limbs(fish was still on!),got it to the net, a nice bright hatchery buck. It hit a Pink Corky with Chartreuse yarn. Went to the next hole, nothing. The next hole on the third cast I got a limb fish with a corky on it. On the next cast I lost the good pink corky and put on a Fluoresent Egg Corky with a sand shrimp, on the second cast, fish-on, got that one to the net too, a nice bright hatchery hen.

All in all a great day, slept in, got two nice fish, came out even on tackle, the fishing gods were looking after me that day.

I'm gonna have to go over and fish the Secret River some day. I keep hearing so much about it on ifish. :grin:

Good job on the fish

Some other rivers you might try if the Secret gets blown out or you don't want to drive so far;
Try the Notellum River or the Zipperlip River. Bring your own rock to stand on though if you plan to fish the Zipperlip. With all of the publicity it gets on ifish it is crowded.

Other wise known as a Limb Cod. Relative of the Granite Grouper. These fish are usually so big that they break off your terminal tackle. It is not uncommon to see one with dozens of corkies, spinners, etc hanging from them. One thing though, they always seem to be on the bite.

I didnt think you needed a shellfish license for bait??? I have mine just curious, since there is no limit on sand shrimp i dont see why they would even bother to check if you had a license or not. All it says in the regs is "A license is required to harvest shellfish, for those 14 years or older."

I'm starting to think that maybe ODFW has their clipping system set up to identify zipperlip fish

How far is the secret from the noetaukie? It has to be right between the notellum and the zipperlip?

Thanks everyone,

I should have said stick fish because I pulled it from the water. sometimes they put up a real good fight. I was fishing the north side of the river. If you have any more questions just ask, and you might receive an answer.
