Wow, it looks like he'd swallowed a basketball. There must be one heck of a food source in that lake!

Yes and no, it was caught in Lake Diefenbaker not really a polluted lake as far as I know but it was a Triploid. I think that the most impressive thing to me was that it was caught from the bank on 6 lb test!!! If you look at the date stamp, you will notice that this fish was caught in the summer of 2007.

Re: New World Record Rainbow
STS article DEC 2007 about this catch and 2 guys from STS went fishing with this guy and his brother
There is a hatchery in the lake that was doing some breeding to get big fish There was an iceflow go thru the lake and damaged the pens where these monsters were, now they are in the lake breeding big fish
Sure would like to go up there

You have the story mostly correct. Yes, they are doing some different stuff on that lake in the way of geneticly modified triploids, and a ton of them did escape into the lake because of ice damaging the pens. But... being triploids, they are not breeding or reproducing at all... they can't. They live to feed all year round and there is a ton of food in the lake. The twin Conrad brothers (aka the Fishing Geeks), have monopolised on this mishap bigtime by learning where the big fish feed and targeting them relentlesly on all different line classes to systematicly knock out a ton of line class records. It sounds like plenty of fun and all, but if I was a record holder from a regular home grown fish (not mutant triploid), I would be pretty dissapointed to see it get knocked out by one of these triploid fish. I am suprised that the IGFA doesn't put these fish into a class of their own.
The other thing is that all those big fish are dying of old age now and the big fish "bubble" has popped. I know a guy that fished with them in the prime year (2007) and it was a no brainer to catch multiple rainbows over 20 lbs in a few days. Last summer he went again and could hardly buy a fish and nothing big was caught at all. All of the fishing for them was done at night and almost all of the big ones were caught soaking dead minnows.

Dan is pretty dead on here. As far as being mad about a triploid in the record books, man this can really relate to major league baseball. I see triploids as a rainbow trout, yeah, they grow big, but not on a natural scale. But you have to say that the likelyhood of another rainbow that size in that lake is very slim. A 43 lb. rainbow is a monster, not real sure what the previous record was, but from here on out any rainbow that beats the 43 mark will have to be a triploid. As far as if they should be in a class of their own, I kinda have to agree. Any native rainbow that is in the 30 or 40 lb class range is a feat that is amazing to accomplish. The triploid tag does kinda tarnish it. But look at whitetails and all the suppliments that people are feeding these days, same boat. Technology will always make things bigger and better, you just gotta roll with it.

Re: New World Record Rainbow
Interesting info on these triploids and why they get so over-sized. Kind of like taking a bull from large stock, castrating him, and then penning him up with all the grain he can eat. Doesn't seem quite kosher but it would be fun to hook on to one!
