Angry Mt Hood pond rant

Took my boy out there today after seeing it had been stocked..not expecting much just wanted to get out of the house, We get there and it is a zoo with many adults hoging every inch of space and smoking away on the old cigs...now I dont mind the smoking to a point but when you sit there in you folding chair chain smoking away taking up the entire bank get a life, they need to make this pond youth only all year long just not part of the year. I would not eat anything that came out of there but they are fun for the kids to catch, also someone needs to let the odfw know that the fish that were stocked were not 12in more like 8in if that. I saw 3 or 4 familys walk down look around and leave due to the site we only stayed 15 min.

I think alot of the spillover crowd form blue lake/glisan ponds makes it over to mt hood pond.

I agree. I tried to take my kids there only to get squeezed out by some creep who was angry my daughter was casting over his lines. There is garbage everywhere. Not the kind of experience I want for my kids.

Was it scheduled to be stocked with "larger" sized trout? If not, ~8" is the "legals" that are usually stocked.

Also, I know many of the stockings have been delayed due to cold water not allowing the fish to grow as quickly as desired, but at least ODFW wants to get fish out as soon as possible, to allow for opportunities for anglers such as yourself and your son. This is often the case with the earlier plants of the year.

Sucks the crowds were so bad and inconsiderate. That too is unfortunately typical with early stocking as the season is getting started and not many places have fish yet.

joi n a private club, or do like I did, buy a boat. Not many interpersonal problems can't be solved with pure speed and large distances. In the immortal words of Al Sleet, the hippy dippy weatherman (George Carlin) " if you don't like the weather, move!"

they said they would be of the 12in trout size, sold the boat to pay bills while off work, I just wont go back to any of the ponds on the east side I would rather not take them if that is the way it will be.

Willis,

I here you clear as a bell. They should make those lakes a child's only fishing park with huge signs that say Parents parent your kids while fishing and this is a NO SMOKING Park

Kids, especially kids..should not have to put up with that crap.

If the odfw said they were stocking 12inch fish...they should have.

I can help. Please get some video. Do you have an OSP contact?
We can request moving this to the main board.
Any volunteers?
You are all welcome to have your kids fish in the Canby pond during Spring Break.
Parents stay busy baiting, casting, untangling, netting, releasing, and taking first fish pics.

The small pond at Canby Park should be stocked soon and it will be kids and disabled only. Watch for it on the stocking schedule and come on out.

sorry to hear about the loss of the boat- thats rough, especially with kids that could be enjoying it. Didn't mean to be inconsiderate, sounds like you have suffered enough of that.
What is happening when even a sport like ours is inundated by people that act like thugs when they could just as easily present themselves as decent citizens that show respect for a man and his family. These guys need the lesson their daddies didn't give them.

It was previously stocked this year with 500 "larger" Trout, and most recently stocked with 1,000 "legal" sized trout. I may be wrong, that is what is on the stocking schedule, which is never written in stone. It always changes, and it even says that on the ODFW site. St Loius is offering some decent action, hopefully less people, or at least better minded fishers.

I deleted my initial reply because I realized this wasn't really worth replying to. If "they" are not obeying the law (ie catch limits), obeying MHCC law (no alcohol), respecting etique (don't smoke around kids, hogging the fishing spot for kids)...then why would they pay the absurd price for a license...If you really believe that as long as they have a license they should be able to fish however "they" want, regardless of respect to others...maybe you should think about deleting your Ifish account because that is not what fishing, nor Ifish, is about...

I just heard it's going to be a youth fishing only as of April 1st and into August. They also said there was a sewer spill in there last year.

I will have to agree that fisherman lately have been rude. I was fishing Walter Wirth a couple of weeks back and this guy pulls up right next to me and starts fishing with spoons( keep in mind im bottom fishing). Almost everytime he threw out his line he crossed mine and caught my line. After the second time I told him that perhaps he should switch tackle and he stated that fishing is his right and he could fish his way anywhere he wants. So I packed up and let the person be. When I fish, I fish for two reasons.... to ENJOY fishing for that perfect fish, and to ENJOY the surroundings. Thanks for that day!!!!

I agree they do pay for a license and they have every right to fish, but they can do it in a way that is respectful to others that are around, As far as the license goes I know alot of folks get popped out there for not having one they will see the stater come down and will bail, I have seen more tham one person taken out of there in cuffs and may tickets written, it need sto be cleaned up no more weed smoking and scum bags hanging around...do what you want but do it at your own home.

All of the boards are clogged with the same complaints about rude fisher people. I am not sure if the numbers are increasing or if it is a new generation of fisher people that weren't taught proper etiquette.

Maybe it's for the same reason that there's not a lot of positive stories leading off the news broadcasts on TV and radio?

Willis, I feel your pain..."Tragedy of the Commons" suck.
When my kids were younger, we'd hit Hornings Hideawy this time of year. Nobody would be there, especially on a weekday.

And this is the reason I am so glad that they opened up the coastal streams. So you can take a kid out and catch a fish without the canned fishery pond and lakes. Teach them how to read water, certain flys or lures for different times of year. Rather, Power bait, worm throw it out there and hope for the best. My father taught me how to fish on the coast range waters. The way it should be taught. Teach them to limit thier kill not kill there limit. Teach them how to cook and eat a fish. That is what will get our youth interested again. The whole outdoor experience. Not crowding them around Mt. Hood pond breathing second hand smoke.

I cut my teeth so to speak fishing the mcKenzie river, fall creek, the upper willamete and numerous other far and out of the way streams flowing out of the cascades around the valley. Best times of my life litterally. I remember wading a larger stream way up high in the cascades and came to a very shallow limestone looking section. There were round holes about a foot in diameter the holes were so deep I couldn't feel the bottom with my 5ft UL trout pole. I just remember thinking how beautiful it was. I'd give anything to know where that stream was, but I can't recall. I remember nothing but old growths and beautiful cut throats.

Interesting. Albeit inconsiderate and mis-spelled. You are correct they do purchase a fishing license to fish. However some decency has to stay within our culture for the younger generation to see that it is fun and is an enjoyable experience. If we dont provide them that, than what good are we? No one enjoys fishing next to drunk, rude, or incosiderate fisherpersons its bad enough we adults deal with it whenever we decide to toss a line from the bank, but when we're talking TROUT fishing in a stocked pond, seriously who is the one who should really "get a life" ? The adult sticking to his guns about "fishing is for everyone perchasing a license" or the kid who wants to have a good time with his dad and hook up perhaps for the first time. I agree with some of the others, perhaps you should delete your I-fish persona the fishing community needs ALOT less of you around.
