If you could hunt any unit for Elk with an auction tag - Which would it be?
Rifle September govenors hunt - Many arguments here, the SE has great Roosies, then you have Wenaha, but Mill creek (Silver Picker posted a pic from a TOAD just outside Mill Creek and Walla Walla are also super prime. Most of the 400 class bulls have actually come from the area around John Day.

If money was not an object...I would be seriously looking to some of the private land in the Fossil Unit....

Re: If you could hunt any unit for Elk with an auction tag - Which would it be?
since the tag is good for 3 months, i would need 3 months to hunt about 5 units. the first 2 i'm not talking, the next 2 are in the cascades, the last 1 or ? would need an outfitter to get me in and out the last 2 weeks of season.

I had not thought about the private lands, the hypothetical is just that so I agree.

Roosevelts=Powers or Willamette
Rocky's=not sure. I'd have a better chance killing a 350" Rosie than a 400" Rocky.

Re: If you could hunt any unit for Elk with an auction tag - Which would it be?
Im gonna agree with crayfinn, there are some toad bulls in the fossil private lands, I have seen them from across a certian river in that area with a spotting scope, but good luck with the access unless you got the coin. But Im gonna go ahead and agree with the masses and say the walla walla, wenaha, and Mt emily would get most of my attention. With that being said, look at the record books, Crook county has had alot of entries, As well as wheeler county. And with Ochocco being limited entry now for bow tags it might afford some attention from me 10 years down the road if i were to ever get the raffle tag.
This was fun, kind of like the "what if" thoughts that go through your head when you pass the Powerball Billboards.

That was my thought on the thread, kinda like winning the lottery Looking at some of the threads I think many of us are in that dreaming phase of the year, looking forward to the hunt in the fall, its winter.

My thoughts would be the east half of Ochoco over to Murderers Creek and then procede up NE (knowing that there are some toads there). With 3 months...you got nothing but time.

I would concentrate the Waller Waller and Wenaha units. If I was looaaadddeeeedddd I would concentrate on some private property in other parts of the state.

SW desert, san jauns or bever in utah, or unit 3a or 3b or 9 in AZ. Possibly 61 or 76 in colorado. If I could hunt any unit for elk it sure wouldn't be in OR.

Really? You really think that you have a better chance at a 390+ bull in those stares/units? Even though a guy just took a 440+ bull just in side the WA border last year in the Wenaha?

Heck yes, they kill maybe 5-10 bulls a year in oregon and WA combined that gross over 375. They kill on average 10-15 bulls a year in utah that gross over 400, 10 + in AZ as well. Its a no brainer the some units in CO there is a very realistic chance of atleast killing a B&C bull. There was a 440 and 409 killed on the SW desert last year. I guess I'd add the state of NV to my list of states too as they consistently take monsters out of there every year. If I wanted a stud rosie, I'd go to Vancouver Island and have a legitimate chance at 350+ Rosie. If you want big bulls and big bucks the best units to apply for in oregon are out of state!

I would agree with Vancouver Island and their monster Roosevelts. I would say a auction or raffle tag in Oregon could easily get a 350-360 bull. Anything else would be hard scouting, private land, or a little luck. I is possible to get a bull over 375 in Oregon, but I would not pass a 350 bull to end up with an auction or raffle tag soup.

That's exactly where IHUNT and I were camped in Sept. 2004, but we didn't have the option of which direction to go!

Re: If you could hunt any unit for Elk with an auction tag - Which would it be?
Wenaha Wilderness area.
I hunted the Wenaha area for years till it became a draw only tag.
My favorite two places to hunt was #1 North / North East of Jubilee Lake in and around the Little Sink and the Big Sink.. #2 Summer Creek Canyon in from Luger Springs.
This is not to say that these two areas are great but our party of 8 would take our share of Bulls every year.

Camp in the corner and have at it.
That said, both WW and Wenaha get pounded from guys dropping off the high road.
Ain't nobody going into the watershed with that FS guy driving up there twice/day.
