no nets this week
I had a voice message from Steve King and don't yet know the details, but there will be no gill nets this week...
Steve said the test-netting yesterday "was very poor," but I need to find out whether there just weren't many fish or whether there were too many of the wrong fish...I'm guessing there weren't many fish because he also said there will be more testing this coming Sunday and most likely net seasons next week...
Bottom line though was there will be no net seasons this week.

Re: no nets this week
Just found this on WDFW's site...
February 23, 2004
ACTION: Test fishing results on Sunday February 22, 2004 were not conducive to setting a season. The Compact did not meet and no fishery is currently in place. The next test fishery will take place on Sunday February 29, 2004.
Further updates will be posted on the hotline as soon as they become available.
Notice to Fishers: Plan to call the "Hotline" Number on Monday and Wednesday afternoons to get the fishing season. The hotline number is 360-902-2500; press "1" for commercial and "2" for Columbia River.

Re: no nets this week
This moves the net fishery later into the season which moves them closer to the determination that they'll be using tooth tangle nets and not 9 inch nets, so the impact on steelhead may go up, depending on the actual mix of fish and the timing of the net size decision. This also means the nets will be in as the sport fleet effort increases. This will be interesting to follow as the complex of factors come together as the season unfolds.

Re: no nets this week
So what are the gilnetters allowed to keep right now? Is this just for sturgeon or can they keep salmon and steelhead also?

Re: no nets this week
This kind of ticks me off. Not only do we allow an indiscriminatory style of fishing we wait until the fishing gets good and then let the nets go take fish from the water. I sure would like to see a season set and fish that season. Just like when I go on the weekends, sometimes the fishig is good, sometimes not so good. Whats next? The water is to clear, the fish can see the nets and the gill netters aren't getting enough and then give them two more weeks? Next thing you know its March.
Feel a little better after that vent but sure wish they would fish and get out of the water.

Re: no nets this week
I was kinda hoping they would get in, get it done, and get out of there..... Sounds like they will wait until the fish are in thick, be in there competing with sport anglers, thus for screwing up my sport oppurtunity

Re: no nets this week
Just received the following email from a friend who knows Steve King, who was out on one of these vessels...
Quote:

I knew that you would want to know. 7 nets fished in the test fishery. They got 5 fish. The commercials asked to wait a while ( one week I think) because there wern't enough fish in the river.

Surely there is a good buy on hay bails going on somewhere for the next few weeks!
