Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
I was just in visiting Hob's in Wrongview, when Dean from Englund Marine Newport tracked me down there for an order.
Dean said that a commercial just fishing for the day yesterday caught 57 chinooks!
That is incredible for this time of year and opening day!
Also Dean said the ocean was like a lake and the bottom fishing is hot.
That's all I know as I am a flat lander, land lubber valleyite now.
Just don't call me a tourist if you catch me at the coast!
Smelt dipping up here has taken a turn for the worse.

Oh by the way fish assassin and corrirod, Dean did say that they were getting five bucks a pound!
Something you probably already knew.

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
Thanks for passing on the report, Dan. Gee, with news like that, there ought to be a "giant sucking sound" from the Salty Dogs towing their boats to the coast.

When does the ocean open up for chinooks?

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
I know, Mark, I know.
We're leaving for Zihuatanejo Friday with Aqua-holic and Popeye (and our Mrs of course) so I knew I couldn't work a chinook trip into the schedule. But I dreamed about the boat last night and spent a couple of hours in it today wishing I was over there.
Oh man, oh man, oh man!

Just think of the taste of fresh ocean salmon, right of the BBQ....that lucious oil, crispy skin....

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
I have never fished the early chinook season much and not at all for many years. I am thinking of trying it this year rather than go springer fishing on the river. Any hints would be appreciated (differences from June-September fishing) The more ocean time I get, the happier I am!

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
Hadn't even given springer fishing in the big blue much thought... what is it like? I got to think the bite is much better than the river, how productive is it?
thanks, gus

Hob's in Wrongview
Edit: LOL
LMAO!
Oh Jen, you busted my gut!
Gus, those are probably mostly southern Oregon and northern California fall chinook stocks that they are catching in that fishery.
Chum King would have better insight on that one.

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
Rod is heading home this morning. I went out with Aqua-holic on Monday to escort Rod for awhile. We came back just before the Rockpile. No fish for him Mon. He went out yesterday and got 4 the fish were in 65-75 fathoms. I'll let him fill in more details. He was pretty happy with the $5 a #.

Re: Chinook and Bottom Fish out of Newport!
I haven't been out yet. My first chance will be on Saturday, if the weather holds.
The trend did not look good when I looked day before yesterday. Five bucks a pound
would be *great*, but by the time I get down there to try my hand you can just bet
that the price will have dropped!!
