Not to hijack the thread but maybe this info is useful for everyone....How do you get the tides for on the Willamette? I have driven up and put in on several occasions only to swing around and get nothing because I didn't know.
i like to fish in the morning..not to say fish can't be caught in the mid day but the winds are usually calmer..as for tide to each their own. it's really never made much of a dif in my book. if I quit marking fish with a tide change then I move. my :twocents: is they "sometimes" may change holes with the the tides...but not always...i've seen a little old worm outfish big globs of stink time and time again...another :twocents:..that make 4 all together which is still a penny less than 5..tight lines
I took my first trek to Astoria last year and it was pretty tough, lots of boats coming in without any fish or any bites. I started to run all over looking for fish and warmer water. I found some flats covered with anchovies and where there is bait there should be gators to...there wasnt any current but we still banged out boat limits in less than 20 min on several occasions. While I agree current is good, the slackwater on the flats on the incoming tide can be murderous.
Lets face it. Current brings dead **** down river. Sturgeon love to eat dead ****. What brings more current, outgoing tide.
Less ******* Translation: Sturgeon are bottom feeders. As bottom feeders who are interested in conserving energy they have figured out that when the tide runs out there is a better chance of finding food floating past them (i.e. they dont have exhaust as much energy trying to search food out.) So naturally sturgeon love the out going tide, it is the equivilent of a human dinner bell.
Scroll down, at the bottom is St. Johns Willamette and Portland Willamette.
