I have been fishing for steelhead and rowing a boat for about 15 years now and I have been very fortunate in experiencing what I thought was everything that a drift boat and steelhead fishing could offer . I have had the good fortune of a steelhead TRIPLE! and a few doubles. I have had 20 pound fish to my boat, and also allot of random events that often make trips great. This past Sunday I had a chance to have a first! no it wasn't a big fish or a wierd strange flounder up a coastal stream or maybe an otter grabing a fish..no this sunday's trip was far better.
with the low flows My good friends Mike Braun and Chrome obsession ( Kevin ) and I finally got together for what we thought would be an epic day of native steelhead fishing. and in the end we where not disapointed.
it starts out great we are all pumped and and excited when kevin makes the first in a what would prove to be a series of poor decisions. He gloves up! now I know there are some of you ( us ) out there that think any time you go out fishing you got to where nitrile gloves. I would agree they are essential in the fall but I am not so hard chore that I wear them all the time . the main reason I wear them in the fall is to protect my hands from the wet gooey egg cure which would not be an issue today. But Kevin true to his roots gloves up and we are on our way. now I will skip ahead to the first good inlet we would come to this morning.....
as I prepare to drop the anchor and we all oooohhh and ahhhh over this very fishy looking piece of river Kevin just couldn't contain himself and had to grab his brand new lami' and sneek a cast in before the boat was all set up. then out of know where it happened. In all the years I have been fishing I have never experienced what I was about to experience. granted I have fished with all sorts of guys from world class steelhead guru's to my very own kids and what was about to take place was a first for me .. I had heard many a story of this takeing place and often laughed at many of the stories I had heard over the years. in the back of mind I always wondered if I would ever see this for myself! would I ever have my own story to tell.. today was the day that question would be answered... in one swooping cast the stars aligned and wind was perfect the form complete. I watched as kevin displayed the " perfect cast " with one hick up...
what you might ask could break up the perfect cast?? well you remember the gloves old kevin had on when we started this day. well the light rain dampened them a bit and just as kevin prepared to watch his offering drop into the slot his hand opened a little to much and I had the perfect seat to watch as his brand new lami flung into the RIVER!! no not his yarn ball and slinkie folks the entire rod!! yes his new lami just apeared to be tossed over as an offering to the river you might say! Kevin responded as any of us would and just apeared to have a delayed reaction. sort of a what the heck just happened stare. As Mike lunged and swung his rod trying to hook the fastly sinking rod ( those things sink fast! ) soon Kevin snapped out of it and the scramble was on. of course the rod sinks way to fast and we are not able to recover this sinking bullet before it would sink to the bottom....
the story dosn't end there. Mike and I without compasion pile on poor old Kevin in his weakest moment like any good friend would. I am fighting back the tears as Kevin is just sick with the thought that his brand new lami is gone forever. well we postion the boat and do everything we can think of trying to snag the line or the rod. we had everything from double slinkie spoon rigs to big ugly old spinners and everything in between trying to get the rod back. and wouldn't you know the trusty bobber and first bite jig rod strikes MONO and I was able to hook the line and reel Kevins baby back up from the bottom !!! I was literaly holding back absolute gut wrenching laughter the entire time and tried to be as seriouse as I could until the rod was back in the boat. then I could not fight it anymore and was laying on the floor of the boat laughing harder then I have laughed in a very long time!
so whats the moral of the story?? just when you thought all hope was lost and you would never get to see a guy just toss his rod over board. take your best buddies out and glove them up and maybe just maybe you can enjoy this scene as much as I did!:applause:
come on Kevin I had to tell the story it was priceless!:applause::flowered:
