Herring yet? Herring ever?
I'm guessing from the lack of reports that the herring weren't in Yaquina this weekend. Are they gonna show?
What will the late or no-show condition mean to us as the season progresses? Is it impending doom or just the calm before the storm?
Do I sound worried?

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
FYI,
There have been a few schools in and a few spawns as well. The ODFW bio who is tracking the herring this year is Keith out of Newport.

I graphed a couple of small schools on Sat. but did not have the rods to fish for them.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
Jim, it's going to be catastrophic.....there will be no bait! No bottomfish, no salmon, no halibut, and no tuna.....!!!
You might as well drop that new boat off in my driveway....

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
I found a friend out Saturday who was jigging herring while we were crabbing in the Yaquina. Both of us had very poor luck. The crabbing was terrible. My buddy and his two sons jigged a total of 13 herring on the high tide. He worked from around the CG station to the terminal buildings with little luck.
Hopefully they will come in soon.......

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
Jerry, you and Ray just bring tears to my eyes. To help a guy out like that is, well, just above and beyond.
Maybe you guys could help me rub a little Rain-x on the windows and check out the front roller on the trailer and see what I need to do for an anchor puller and help me fix up the handline supports on the transom and ....
Actually I'll just leave the list since I'm off to Zihuatanejo next week.
And thanks.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
Stopped in at Englands on saturday. While I was there I asked about the herring. The Gal at the counter who by the way seems to know more than any of the guy's said that the herring came in during January to spawn, not a big run and that packaged herring prices will cost more than last year. I hope they come back and visit like they did last year clear into July.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
I talked yesterday to one of the permit holders and he said they were big time disappointed. Yes there was a run in Jan, and they came and went before they were ready for them.
They put their nets away and do not expect much more.
In May there are new herring that show up....( no eggs) and perfect for plugging.
As far as prices.....these spawners don't effect that.
Maybe those seal lions will get tired of waiting and leave also.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
I wished they would eliminate that commercial herring fishery in Yaquina Bay until they are healthy again.
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me that they allow that fishery to ship the roe overseas when the run hasn't been up to par for many years now.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
If the herring numbers are down then whats that mean for the rest of the food web in the ocean? Humm.. maybe things aren't doing so great out there and it's time to do something about it. Ever hear "Of Fishing Down The Food Web", many journal publications are out there. The basic premise is that commercial fisheries around the world move from the higher predatory fishes, once thier depleated, to lower tropic levels like herring or anchovey's. What will be left the phytoplankton fillets.

Re: Herring yet? Herring ever?
The reason for the lack of herring are the huge swarms of salmon wait out there for us to catch.
