Default Saturday ... Depoe Bay ... Coasties ...

OK gang, was it one of US that went out of Depoe Bay Saturday morning? The
report was that a 19'(?) trailer boat launched and went out through the hole
to go fishing. I guess when he was comming in he got to within something like
30' of the rocks and decided to turn it around and go back out. Was the boat
taken in at Newport??

We were working on the boat (Pacific Mistress) until about 1:30 and went to get
a bite to eat. When we got back the truck and trailer was gone. I had seen
somebody stop at the truck earlier and climb inside and then leave. No keys to
drive it to Newport?

Come on, inquiring minds want to know!!

Gottafish, the worry is not that someone went out of Depoe, but rather that they couldn't get back in. We always worry when a brother is out there and maybe needs some help.

I remember last year when Pilar went out of Depoe and ended up coming in at Newport in the dark of night, and had to find a ride to get his rig. It was a long walk (and night) for him and his shipmates.

We not only want our brothers safe, we want to offer assistance if we can.

While we were working on the boat getting it ready to launch a county cop came
down the boat ramp looking for the folks that had launched. We had a nice
disscusion with him and I invited him to climb up the ladder and go inside to
take a look around. He was just burning a little time in the parking lot waiting
for whoever it was that went out to come back in so he could write them a big old
whopping ticket.

The Coasties were also looking for him. I guess (from what the cop said) that
the bar at Depoe Bay was closed to under 30' Saturday morning and these folks
went anyway. From what I could gather, that is a ticketable offense (a ticket for
being clueless?) by both the Coast Guard AND the County Mounties.

The nice police officer told me that the boat had made a run at the hole to come
in and had turned around about 30-40 feet out and gone back out to sea. I worry
about people going in and out of Dopey Bay when conditions aren't good ... and
they were definatly dicey Saturday morning.

As we were headed South through Depoe Bay headed for Newport I took one look at
the "middle grounds" between the hole and the first bouy and knew in my heart of
hearts that I wasn't going to chance a run through *that* with my little 30 footer!

What was this guy thinking?? As I recall it was 10 and 5 Saturday morning, with around a 20-25knot wind . A 19' boat, and those seas combined with the Middle Grounds and the Hole at Depoe is a recipe for disaster--turning around 30-40' short is almost insane!!
I am proud of those who are keeping the vigil. I remember when Pilar, or was it Puffin, had to head to Newport last year. What great support.
Let's keep our eyes out.

Actually WH, the ocean looked pretty good all day on the outside. It was just
in the middle grounds that it looked terribly scarry! I know that *I* had no
desire to try to run it!! There WERE a few boats that went out Saturday ...
JimBob (the old cement hulled commercial boat), Kadaho (a fifty foot charter
boat) and one other that my wife saw go out (at LEAST a 40 footer). Being
closed to under 30' means that most of us don't need to be putting our lives in
danger by trying to do *that* trip.

Gotta remember, NO fish is worth your life!!

WH, I was on the Pilar on a trip when we made a decision not to run all the way back up to Depot, this was not weather related... We knew that was the plan very early in the day. Could that be what you are thinking of?
