Default Honda 30 Question

Has anyone here had experience with about a 2001 30 hp Honda outboard ?
If so could you describe the functioning of the cooling
telltale port on the side of the motor.
Should there be a steady stream, or does it only show when the motor heats up.
Is it thermostat controlled ?
When testing mine in a barrel tank, it didn't show for some time, then shut off and came on again after a period of time. Nothing consistnt ??
Just trying to determine if my water pump is working properly.
Thanks

Cool Re: Honda 30 Question

The tell tale is a direct indicator of how well the water in your outboard cooling system is circulating ...
It should start a second after the motor is running and not stop until you shut it off ...
If it was Me I would rebuild the water pump in the outboard , and if I still had a problem I would work backward from the nozzle to the cooling water jacket cover and possibly replace the thermostat also ...
Just to know that all was good from a certain date and then preform regular maintenance from then on ...
Do not use compressed air to back flush the tell tale as if there is an obstruction you will be forcing it backward instead of removing it ...

the compressed air is the ticket
it is salt build up usually
i do the air then do a salt-a-way flush
works every time i have done it over the years

could also be the poppet valve is sticking

I was told by someone that The flow was thermostatically controlled and that it wouldn't
flow until the engine became hot enough, but I
have been told it should flow all the time by others.
I am getting a 50.50 response on that.
I ran it for about a half hr in a garbage can of water and it ran beautifully and did not seem to be overheating. I could put my hand on any part of the
engine. Do any of you have either the 25 or 30 horse Honda motor ?
I was told by the person I bought it from that he had a new water pump installed last spring, but cannot confirm it as he did it at Browns Landing and they are out of business now.

When I was running it, it did put a stream out a couple times pretty strong and then shut down again after a half min or so...

The tell tale should have a steady stream of water at all times ...
Sounds like you might have a buildup of sand or debris under the cover the tell tale hose is hooked to ..
All the compressed air in the world will not remove these annoying sand pockets ...
You should also feel the temperature of the water exiting the tell tale , it should just be warm not hot ...
And if it never warms up it could be a stuck thermostat ...

What if I hooked up the flush port on the side of the drive unit to pressured water? Do you think that might do the trick.
If not, how do I get to the plsce to clear it. There isn't much room where that tube comes from.
Do you have a Honda 30?
Thanks for your reply.

No I do not have a honda 30 but have worked on them in the past ...
What year and model 30 hp do you have anyway ? more information will help me look up schematics to figure out what you are up against ...
Hooking up to pressured water will probably not increase the flow from your water pump much if at all ...
But as was mentioned earlier a engine cooling system flush with salt terminator can be the ticket in some instances ... Pictures can be helpful also ...

Remove the cover and follow the little tube with the hole in it back to a tee take the little tee apart remove the Debre reassemble, I have found a few treasures there, same year bigger Honda!

I want to thank everyone here for all of your input.
I made contact with the Honda Customer service rep also today and began to ask him for his ideas on this and before I got out the first sentence, he said "Bugs" Well I took off the hose as suggested...Not easy, as my hands don't fit in there...First a beetle was about half way in the inside side, then I Pushed a wire through the indicator flow hole and wa-la a Larvae was stuck in it. Re attached the hose, with some explitives and started the engine and it looked like a tiny fire hose.. water water water.. nice steady stream. Aparently that little hole serves no other purpose than to just show the water pump is working, as he stated it was still working, just not indicating that it was. I think from now on when I park the boat, I'll stick a small piece of tape over the hole so nothing else crawles up there. Now I know why we feed bugs to fish <LOL>
Thanks folks your advice was right on mark on the bug thing.
Gary

Good to know. What will vinegar do to Aluminum.
I use to use that as an etch for aluminum prior to painting. It is pretty acedic.
