Default New to Tillamook Bay

I was getting tired of being skunked Springer fishing and thought I'd head to Tillamook for the first time. Grew up in Corvallis and fished Newport forever.

Just want to play around in the bay, bring home some rock bass and crab. Anything I should know, like "stay away from here-danger", or "stay out of my hole, newbie" .

Any info would be great, plan on putting in at Garibaldi. Just bay fishing, as I have a little 16 Loweline with a 9.9.

Thanks in advance. Also, should I think about lings or something bigger? Don't want to be caught unprepared.

A 9.9? I'd be a little nervous about outgoing tides near the jetties. They can really rip sometimes. I'd take a big anchor just in case.

I'm with 1pump, make sure you check the tides as the currents can really build up in there and you won't be able to make it back to the marina, or worse yet you'll be sucked out to the mouth. Even the boat rental place won't rent their boats on a large outgoing tide.

Just time it right and you'll be ok. There is some bottom fishing there but it's right along the jetties so again be safe. The jetty at Newport is much more condusive to better bottomfishing and much safer.

Thanks guys! That's why I asked. Methinks I'll examine the tides closely, or head down to familiar territory!

Tillamook is pretty much a bay of sand flats except for the three little pigs

If you take your boat out towards the jetties, be sure to stay between the navigation markers as you go past the coast guard station. Do not cut to the right until you have gone by the last dolphin navigation marker. There are some rocks that are to the right headed out and I believe they have taken more than one outdrive. At high tide you cant see them, at low tide they are visible.

You are probably underpowered but as long as you are aware of the tides and dont get caught in the rip you should be fine. I think the rental boats at the marina only have 10 or 15 hp motors.
