Default Ocean Salmon March 15th?

Hi I'm a new member to Ifish. I have followed this site for years and just now joined. I have an ocean going boat and hope to chat with others fishing in the ocean and rivers around the northwest.

Am I correct about the season opening for Chinook on March 15th?

Anybody going out?

I would also like to hook up with a group of ifishers and go out for halibut or tuna sometime. It sounds like you go out in a caravan at times. Sounds fun!

Welcome to the Dogs My Limit!

Glad you decided to join finally. Tell us a little about yourself, what kind of boat you have, what ocean experiences you've had, and throw in a good fishing story.

We always like to hunt in packs when possible so join in for Hali's, Salmon, and tuna whenever you go.

Not sure the ocean will cooperate but if it does I'll be trying to fish her on Monday somewhere on the coast. Probably Newport. I'd like to get down to Coos Bay but the weather looks like it's only going to give a 1 day window and that's a long way to drive for just one day of fishing. We'll see.

Hope to see you on the water or at a TA meeting!

Regs can usually be found on the website of the folks who make them (ODFW & PFMC).

Go to:

http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/odfw/regs/salsport2004.html

And (like Rod sez) you best tell a story, otherwise someone might give you a smart-alec answer about where to find regulations. Welcome!!

Hi I'm a newbie and as you requested I will tell you about my boat and a fish story.

I just bought a 2003 Arima 21' Hard Top. I bought it from a guy in San Diego who set it up for Tuna fishing. It has everything you can imagine including a new Epirb. (Emergency Distress Beacon) I used to own an Arima 17' Sea Chaser which I took as far out as 15 miles. I could not go farther due to a small gas tank in that boat. I understand that regardless of the size of your boat you must pay attention to the weather and tides when going out in the ocean. I also just bought a Rocket Wear suit. I believe I am properly equipped to be in the ocean, but I'm still very cautious. "It's always better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it." That is why I try to over-do safety items.

I have only been fishing off-shore since last summer when I fished off-shore almost every weekend. I fished out of Newport, Hammond and Tillamook. I would like to do most of my fishing in the ocean. The rivers in the city are too crowded and people seem to be rude and in a constant hurry. It seems like when I see another boat in the ocean the captain waves and I wave and we both have the understanding that we are in the middle of nowwhere and we might be the closest help the other person has. There seems to be more of a positive and less competitive vibe among the captains of boats I've encountered in the ocean as apposed to the local rivers. Or maybe it's just showing respect to our fellow human beings, I'm not sure. It's like the "boat ramp mentality" carries over to the boating in the Portland area rivers.

The opinions I stated above are just my personal opinions and do not necessarily represent every boater in the rivers and ocean.

On to the fish story. I guess I have two. The first one happened last summer fishing near the CR Buoy off the Columbia River. My fishing partner and I had some of the best fishing of our lives. This may be normal for some of you experienced fishermen, but It was extraordinary for us. We had three fisherman on the boat that day and all of us caught our limit of salmon within about 2 hours of fishing. At one point my fishing partner had a silver on his line near the surface, it was jumping and shaking. It came off the line and my partner looked upset and began reeling in his line when another silver came shooting out of the water and hit his hearing. That fish was on and fighting for about 30 seconds and then it came off. He then began reeling in his line again wondering what the chances of that happening was. As his gear was about 15 feet off the side of the boat another silver came darting in behind it and hit it. He had that one on and landed it. It was an average size hatchery fish, but that was the only average thing about that day. My fishing partner is an expert at loosing fish! : )

Was it the same fish or was that three different fish. Either way it was cool.

I have another story but I'm out of time now. I'll save it for later.

Thanks

Nice boat! It was one of the choices I looked at but the cost was a little outside my range (read jealousy). Look forward to meeting you this summer and catching some fisheez with you.
