Anyone fished the John Day this past week? I'm heading up Monday with a buddy, weather permitting, to fish between Kimberly and Monument. Any word on what's happening in that stretch? ray:
Thanks for the replies. The Kimberly and Monument stores gave me rather encouraging reports, but wanted to hear from someone who had been in the water. Anxious to hear what happens Sunday. Thanks again.
I floated between the rock pits (below Kimberly) on Sunday. My son picked up about a 5 lb hen and the other guy in the front got about a 7 lb buck. Water is very low and clear, river running about 40% of 10-year average. Snow this morning so may bring it up a little.
Out of curiosity what has been your hatchery:wild ratio this year? Do you think that there are more or less hatchery strays going up the JD this year? I've heard conflicting reports... Thanks.
We fished above the dam last sateday. Caught 2 nates in 4 hours. Talked to a truck load of natives putting in while we were pulling out and they said they were averaging 1 hatchery for every 8 or 9 fish. It was COLD!
It has been dumping rain here the last few days, river has gone from clear to a mud flow. Rain has parted now and it is starting to clear which means the river should hopefully be in decent shape with lots of new fish by Saturday. I would think the farther upriver you go it will be better this weekend.
