I am in the Market for a New Boat (Going to sell my Seasport)
I have it down to the 22'Thunderjet Alexis Os Ob but stuck on the power 225 Suzuki or a couple grand more for the 225 Honda 4-strokes.
Suzuki has some nice features like running a 16'' prop and other sales pitches in the book ive read 100's of times...LOL
But I keep thinking about the Honda I have one now that has been on my last 2 boats as a kicker and have loved it.
Some of you here on Ifish have the Suzuki's and like them so it sounds but what about parts ..were do you get them lets say at the coast...everyone has honda parts.
Any help would be great, I have a deposit on a boat now from the Sportsman Show but am second guessing myself everday.
I understand you Hogtide, Heres the reason
I have a 19 Foot Skipper if it was a 22 or 24 I would be Happy:meme:But I have 2 young boys and my dad is getting up in age(78) .We fish the Columbia and have never hit the big blue yet.
So to answer your question I will hate to see the Yellowjacket go but we just need more room!!
I will add though that I am starting on my 4th season with a Suzuki 140Hp and have had zero problems. We run two others at work, same story, no problems whatsoever.
Yellow Jacket - Tracker did a TON of OB research before his repower and LOVES to talk about it. You might find some interesting information here, but you may also want to ping him.
You need to take a hard look at the Evinrude Etec, it beats the socks off a 4 stroke motor in every catagory. The best thing of all is no service for the first 300 hours, or 3 years.
They are lighter than a 4 stroke,
They get better fuel milage,
They have more power and torque,
They have less moving parts,
They done need oil changes and valve adjustments,
They are quieter than a 4 stroke.
I have been on Joes boat and was absolutely impressed with the performance of the etec.(and the guys fishing prowess). But seriously the etec is a killer motor.:twocents:
Since I have not had the Etecs long I can not speak as to reliability yet, but they are way lighter, no comparison on hole shot/torque. I think at least in my application they were the only choice. Just another choice in the many choices you have to make. In the end, the real only choice that will make the difference for you is to make sure you have ample power. Dont short yourself here. Get near max power. You can throttle down if too much power, if you are all the way up there is no where to go!
Took the wife out for a Valentines Day test drive :flowered: (didnāt think about it at the Sportsman show when I set up a water test)
We liked the boat and all the room is offers, Suzuki 225 was very quiet and pushed the boat very well. No GPS in the boat but for a 22' 102" beam Full Hard Top and Alaskan Bulkhead it got with the program!! Very quiet, like I said before my father is hard of hearing and at the dock when it was warming up we leans over to me and whispersā ...why is that water coming out of the motor. lol gotta love the old guy.
Yeah, ETEC is more expensive cause you consume oil and gas... I have heard good things about the larger HP, but the 50hp that made it debu on the Kenai this summer got spanked... Was a total dog, maybe equivelent to 35 hp....
REally for a big 225 there would be three options, Yamaha, Suzuki, and then a distant Honda or Mercury.
I had a DF140 and it was a great motor. I wouldnt pay another 2k just to get a Honda. The only negative I found owning a Suzuki was the darn thing was so quiet I left it on a few times while trolling with the kicker. Suzuki I beleive uses a self adjusting timing chain as well. Prop selection was limited with the Suzuki thought.
Yellow Jacket,
I will take you for a ride and let you see the difference yourself. Meet me at the ramp, or at Channel Marine. I dont see any other motor manufacture with a display motor to be started inside there show room, other than the Evinrude Etec.
Why is that?
Cleanest burning Outboart motor on the market!
Quitest motor on the market...
Come look, it will not hurt you to do some shopping.
Already investigated this. About equal in customer satisfaction and reliability. Zukes are a tad cheaper and offer longer factory warranties. Honda has more service dealers and better parts availability. So there ya go.

I say suzuki is a great choice I have a 140 no problems exelant economy and very good throttle response. As far as T.J. goes also a great choice I own a 20 luxor after looking at all kinds of boats there was no tuff decission to be made, My use is rivers and across C.R. bar next boat will be T.J. ELEXIS OFF SHORE. maybe then the wife will be willing to venture into the big blue.WHO KNOWS
Randy
I'm a honda guy but I would not loose sleep if you were to get the suzuki. I have heard nothing but good things about suzuki but I have heard a few minor complaints on the large bore hondas. Suzuki has fewer dealers so it will be harder to get parts and service anywhere you go....I think that would be the only downfall of the suzuki.
