Nice report...

I thought Jim was retired from guiding

He is definately the one to turn to for the low down on this river.

KHH,
Rather than a fishing guide, think of him more like a tour guide showing you the ins and outs of the river. Yes of course we made stops at all of the good steelhead haunts but we didn't sit on each hole for an hour. We made 10 casts and then moved on to the next stretch. It really is a cool trip and we got to do a little bit of whitewater rafting down jack, queen, king falls. -Eric

Ya Eric,

I have met Jim several times at NW Steelheader functions and have swapped stories with him...

He is definately an awesome story teller and has shared his experiences with many of us and made many of us better steelheaders...

Truly an awesome person to enjoy a day with on the river for sure...

Here's the cool part. Jim was an absolute expert on the NFN way back in the 1960s. He has been showing folks his river for at least 45 years (that I know of). What a legend!!!

I know that the distinction is vague, but is it the same thing? I bought a map from him and he showed me the ropes. The proceeds for the map went to the NW Steelheaders. Where's the crime? Maybe if he was just using the map program as a dodge to keep guiding when it wasn't legal for him to do so it would be wrong. As far as I know, he chose to retire and he could guide again if he wanted to. Am I missing something?

Doug, Dakotan, The bear

Did you guys pay Jim? Doug, you claim you bought a map and he took you fishing? How much did this map cost? Sounds like the guy who wanted to scalp tickets to the superbowl but that was illegal so he sold $1000 dollar tee-shirts and threw in free tickets. If you pay him directly, it's against the law point blank. If he took you fishing and asked you to donate x amount of money to the NWS, then it may not be against the law. And anyway, if it was just the people buying maps from Jim, this really wouldn't be a big deal. I know a number of people who go on guided trips with Jim and pay him anytime they go. We share some clients. But what if an accident happened and or you got hurt or died, what would there be for your medical bills or families?

It wouldn't be that bad with Jim if he wasn't so outspoken about guides, and if he didn't lobby against them or try to get their fees raised. Fees he doesn't pay. If anyone wants to check and see if Jim ever had a guides license, you can call the State Marine board and ask (it's public record). I think to retire from something means that you need to have done it above the table before or to quit doing it under the table. I am sure the disablity check he gets keeps him from doing it legally, but does that make it any less wrong?

Whooooo....

I am confused...I was always told by many that Mr. Erickson was a guide before he retired...

This is quite interesting...

Would Jesus have an electric motor on his drift boat?

The real question is, would Jim Guide without a license?

Actually Jesus would not need either an electric motor or drift boat,,he would just get out and walk if he felt like it..............

Okay, this is getting pretty heavy on all accounts. If there is a situation that needs to be handled, it needs to be done in the proper channels.

Ifish is not that channel.

The topic is closed.

Default What to expect from HustlerJim on the NFN

I heard so many good reports lately of floats with Hustler Jim Erickson on the North Fork Nehalem that I decided to give it a try. Friday was just too nice a day to spend at work. So I took it off and floated down the North Fork Nehalem with Hustler Jim. A bit chilly to start off with but luckily the steelies were biting so that warmed me up quick. Weather was great, I enjoyed the fishing stories and history of the river and ever evolving countryside surrounding the river. Jim is truly a good fisherman and knows the North Fork like the back of his hand. He showed me how to fish it as well as pointed out the holes, how to get there, and what rocks the fish hide behind. It was a great learning experience and one that I hope will come to good use for years to come. We started the day around 7:45 by launching at the hatchery and then floated down to his house by 1pm....just in time for lunch. Then floated down to Aldervale take out and back to his house by 5pm. Jim is a great guy and good entertainer. Plus, who could complain about going home with a limit of metalheads. I caught one on a #4 blue fox with silver blade and the other on a Tom's blue/red/silver wiggle wart. One was about a mile down from the hatchery and the other was about a mile upriver from the takeout. I would highly recommend taking a trip with Jim....well worth the money.
