Default First time to Netarts for Crabbing. Q's?

My daughter, my wife, her parents and I are heading down to Netarts for the upcoming weekend and want to go crabbing. We have crabbed in Tillamook before but not Netarts.

Can anyone give me some tips on some good locations from a boat and if we can/should use our 20FT w/prop (preferred) or just rent from the Marina.

I have heard mixed stories about crabbing there with anything larger than a row boat.

Catching Nemo,

I have crabbed in Netarts Bay quite a few time in my 20' Jetcraft. It works just fine, unless there is a lot of weeds floating around. You will be just fine with a prop. I always go around the point at the launch and head toward the ocean. Don't get to close. Drop your pots in 15' to 20 feet of water and wait. I haven't been down there this year, so I can't tell you how the crabbing has been. Hope that helps.

The tidal currents in Netarts are very strong, especially now with a full moon. By far the best crabbing is at slack tide. Beware, the tides in the bay are about an hour later than the times published in the tide tables.

At slack water, I sometimes do better with the rings instead of the traps.

Look for deep water to set in. There are some worthwhile areas farther back in the bay.

Netarts crabbing is seldom red-hot, but you can usually get enough for dinner.

I've crabbed at Netarts 50+ times. You can either head towards the ocean as mentioned before... or if you are crabbing on the incoming you can drop pots inbetween the road and the sand flat that runs parallel to the road. I've had great luck dropping pots from the ramp ... all the way to the little channel that leads to the marina. That tide RIPS.... so be careful on an outgoing. I typically crab from 2 hrs before high.. to about an hour after.
