Which bow for a beginner?
Hey guys, I have decided to try my hand with bow hunting since all my hunting partners have gone to archery. I have decided to put a limit on the price of the bow of 500.00 dollars. I have found quite a few bows already set up for right in my range, I found a Mission ux2 made by Mathews for that price and a few made by Martin. What other brands would you guys look at?

A great first starter bow would be a Hoyt Ultratech with XT 2000 limbs. That is what I shoot and it is a killer bow. You can buy one used for around $300 to $350 used.
Check out Archerytalk.com and look at the classifieds.
Good luck,
Paul

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
Was in the same spot last year, except I used to bowhunt a long time ago. Asked the same questions. Everyone here said "go shoot a few", I did. Came down to a Martin vs. a Bowtech. The Bowtech felt a smidge better TO ME than the Martin. That's what I bought, and I've been very happy with that decision. I spent a little more than your buget, but I bought a full package, and was still out the door for under $700 with a dozen arrows.

If you're on archerytalk.com you should easily find a very good bow in your price range. You can also pick up all the accessories on there dirt cheap aswell.

I wouldn't over think it too much. Find one that feels right. The hunter is the killer not the bow.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
I just picked up my first bow a couple weeks ago. I decided on the bowtech sniper. Couldn't be happier. Fun to shoot and super smooth.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
My buddy bought a Hoyt Powerhawk last year that was about that price. Im a Bowtech guy myself. I have shot his Hoyt. It shoots smooth with not much vibration. Just like a couple other people have said. Go shoot a bunch of different bows and see which one is the most comfortable. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
You can get lots of good bows just a couple years old and fully loaded for $300-600.00
Just be sure you get the draw length right and have a pro shop look it over for ya to check the string and all....good luck shopping!

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
I have a mission and it works great for me. I was just starting out, just like you, and I liked how it shot and it was in my price range. I would certainly recommend it.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
My first bow was purchased just over a month ago.
I went with PSE.
I got last year's model that included ready to shoot with a quiver, release, arm guard, 4 carbon arrows, a whisker bisquit rest, 4 pin sight and a Rogue X bow for $500.
Bow is light, fast and smooth.
Give them a look.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
The last time I helped a beginneer we got a used Bowtech Tomcat. Got it in 50-60 lbs and used a hostage rest and multi-pin sight. That rest is really bullet-proof easy to start hunting with.
This worked out extremely well. If you get a used one off ebay or archerytalk make sure it is 2006 or newer so you have easy-change cam mods so you can dial in your draw cheaply and easily.
For the money you really can't beat that bow. We shopped around and were just under $400 for everything. Wow, it really shoots sweet too.
I'm setting up two other newby friends and I'm going the exact same route based on success.

Re: Which bow for a beginner?
I'd buy a new bow in your price range or less. If you take to the sport, the first bow you buy won't one you stick with very long. The way the technology is advancing getting a used bow doesn't seem practical. By the time you have had a bow for a couple of years you will know what bow you really want.
