Yes, and they'll hybridize with wood ducks. The ones that escape often end up flying with woodies.

There hasn't been any successful hybridization between Wood Ducks & Mandarins. This info is directly from the experts in the field.
There is a genetic difference that prevents it. Wood Ducks can Hybridize with other ducks though such as Mallards.
Some of you may remember my threads about the Mandarin pair that I was fortunate to observe from Oct of 09 until this may.
I recently traveled to California an was fortunate to meet the auther of The Mandarin & the Wood Duck that was published in 96.
My wife and I were fortunate to spend a wonderfull few hours with him & his wife. They have owned a 2000 acre ranch in northern California where for more than 30 yrs they have developed a mecca for both Wood Ducks & Mandarins. He is a very young 95 yrs old.
Starting in 1968 they have developed about 25 small lakes and have about 125 nest boxes where both Wood Ducks & Mandarins nest each year. The population in the area is though to be about 200 Mandarins along with the Wood Ducks.
Anyone wishing to read this great book should check it out at your local library. I highly recommend it.
We are hoping that we are blessed with the return someday of the pair in the future.
A little more info that I gained from them was that they traveled throughout the country with two other Authors who have published books about both the Mandarin & the Wood Duck as far back as the 50's.
I am now the proud owner of a signed copy of one of those books and one of the original 1952 books about the Mandarin.
They are a beautiful bird that I hope someday can be observed more often.
That is a very nice mount you have.
Here's a picture that I havn't posted before. He was a flawless bird. I hope to see him again.
And one with his mate.
