Fish and Wildlife Commission will adopt Columbia River spring chinook season

SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will meet Feb. 19-20 in Astoria to formally consider and adopt a fishing season for spring chinook salmon in the Columbia River.

Thursday includes a tour of several facilities in the Astoria area including some select area fisheries near Astoria, and crab and fish processing plants. The public is invited to join Commission members on the tour, but must use their own transportation; to join the tour meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Cannery Pier Hotel, No. 10 Basin Street.
The public is also invited to attend a 4:00 reception in the Union Fish meeting room at the Cannery Pier Hotel. This event is an opportunity to meet Commission members and ODFW staff and discuss current fish and wildlife issues.
Friday’s meeting will begin at 8 a.m. in The Loft at the Red Building, 20 Basin Street, Suite F in Astoria. The Commission will consider the recommendations of the Joint Columbia River Compact for the spring chinook fisheries on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The compact met Wednesday and developed season structures for March and April on both rivers.

The Commission will hear preliminary results from a survey on the economic impact of hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing, a briefing on marine reserves, updates on the Klamath Basin hydropower agreements, and an informational briefing on the mule deer initiative.

The Commission also will appoint a new member to the Fish Screening Task Force, and review and approve the implementation of the 25-year Angling Enhancement Plan, which will guide ODFW’s efforts to enhance recreational fishing opportunities throughout the state. The Commission is the policy-making body for fish and wildlife issues in the state. The seven-member panel meets monthly. Agenda item exhibits may be requested by calling the ODFW Director’s Office at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6044.
Public testimony will be held Friday morning immediately following the adoption of Temporary Rules. Persons seeking to testify on issues not on the formal agenda may do so by making arrangements with the ODFW Director’s Office, at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting, by calling 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6044.
