Default nikon archers choice range finder

i saw a couple of guys on ifish post good reviews on the archers choice range finder. i have been thinking of posting this thread for a while now. i fugure i owe to anyone who is thinking of purchasing this model.

this is a great range finde...if you live in texas

the readings are very accurate and the incline decline technology seems to be spot on. the problem is if there is ANY moisture in the air, and i mean ANY, this unit will not work.

last late bow season we had slight to thick fog every day of the season (low ares i hunt). this meant i was carrying around a $250-$300.00 paper weight. i can understand malfunction in super moist or foggy conditions but, this was not the case most of the time. it wouldnt even work if my eyes could barely detect moisture in the air. this unit does not come with a rain mode.

i have talked to a couple of other hunters who experianced the same problems. this is not a good choice for OR/WA hunters. the 550 may work in the fog. i dont know, i have only used the bow model. possibly they will address this issue in a new version. lets hope so.

any suggestions on range finders that work good in rain/fog let me know. angle copensation would be nice..not a must.

p.s if anyone would like to purchase an archers choice range finder or cool paper weight let me know...

I opted for the Rifle Hunter and used it in Oregon and Montana last year.
It worked ok if the fog wasn't too dense, but moderate fog was ok (see attached). In MT it worked better than the Leopold the guy I was with was using.

i had a leopold before that...with angle compensation. good unit for rifle. did not work well in bow mode from 40-100 yards (when i needed it the most).

was told that you have to input draw length, weight, arrow length and weight including broadhead in order to get accurate reading and you can only input for 1 bow didn't make sense for me with 2 boys to range for also,so went with nikon 880 on sale at sportsmans for 270.00
