Default Blue Marlin adventures in Kona Hawaii

I thought I would share our Kona Hawaii fishing adventures with all the Salty Dogs.

Two weeks ago my wife Lori, myself and our Diving/Fishing buddies Randy and Karen Turkal headed to Kona Hawaii for some diving and fishing adventures. I wont bother you with all the diving, site seeing stuff and get right to the fishing part of the adventures.

We chartered a 26 foot boat named Hapa Laka (Hawaiian means "Half Wild and Half Tame") for big game fishing. It was very comfortable for the 4 of us and Captain Allen, who turned out to be a great guy! He knew his job, did it well and got us into fish. We were 5 minutes out of the harbor when the first reel started singing that favorite tune! We didn't see WHAT was ripping line off the reel for the 60 seconds and then looking back
300 yards we saw a Blue Marlin jumping in the air shaking his head trying to throw the hook. It was just like on TV with the Marlin jumping and shaking over and over again. It must have done
this 10 times....Wow..... the fight was on! My Wife Lori fought this fish for the first 7-8 minutes and said..."I can't do this anymore, it's way to strong for me, can you take over"? I was about to jump out of my skin thinking the same thing. I jumped in the chair and did an involuntary fishing War cry something like YEEEEAAAAA BABYEEEEEEEEE!!.... BRING IT ON!!
The Captain would angle towards the Marlin and I would pick up line...then the fish would strip line back out! It was back and forth for 30 minutes. I would estimate we got the fish within 50 yards of the boat before it ran towards the
boat threw the hook and was gone.....d#mn! I was drenched in sweat from all the adrenaline flowing, pumping the pole, reeling, and heart pumping excitement. It dosent get any better than this! Wow...I have a whole new respect for arlin. Being 6 foot tall, 225 lbs, still active lifting weights at the gym and in fairly good shape at 48 years young. I was thinking,
before actually having a Marlin on, that I could horse (muscle) it in without too much of a problem. Well was I wrong.....it was like having a tug of war with something that is 10 times stronger than you are. What I learned is that you have to use the Boat, the fishing pole, the reel, all the fishing smarts available
and try to use it all to your advantage while trying not to wear yourself out in the meantime. Even though we didn't land the Marlin it was my
absolute best fishing trip of my life to this day! I just keep playing it over and over in my
Head......Wow......what fun!!

But wait there's more: An hour later we hooked up again and after 5 minutes of fight and Chinese fire drill getting the other lines in, we landed a 30 LB Short Nosed Spear fish. After the Blue Marlin it seemed like it ran to the boat and jumped in. Lines back in the water and after a 2 hour dry spell one of the reels started playing our favorite tune again. Well you guessed it... it was yet another Blue Marlin stripping line out for 60 seconds. Then 300 yards back it was showing off, jumping in the air shaking its head back and forth. My buddy Randy got his shot at it this time. It was an exact same scenario as a this first one. It was 30 minutes later it ran towards the boat threw the hook and away it went. He was soaking wet but had a smile a foot wide on his face! Wow...now that was fun!

Captain Allen estimated both the Blue Marlins to be about 250-300 Lbs each.

Catching Albacore of Oregon shore is fun but this was the ultimate fishing adventure!

Now we are back home thinking about when is the next trip out Albacore fishing.

I'm Hooked for life and there's only one cure!

Anchorpoint,
I'll bet the Kona charter we went out with might know of some charters in Maui that won't be too expensive. The Hapa Laka is a small Mom and Pop and they only charge $315 for 8 hours of fishing.
They are Allen and Karen at 1-808-322-2229.

Try searching the internet for Maui fishing.

Good Luck and have fun!

"Captain Allen estimated both the Blue Marlins to be about 250-300 Lbs each."

And those are just teenagers  ! Yep- I'll stick to the "little" Stripes, Sailfish and the Dorado thanks you very much. A guy could die of thirst while fighting one of those big blues!
