Work has been slow and cant go to alaska this year for halibut. Was wondering about charters or guides in Oregon and Washington, also what the going rate is?

You can try Big Mike on the The Blitz (see link at the bottom of the page or THE BLACK ROCKET , but you'll need to be ready for an E-ticket ride.

If I were to go out of OR I would go on the Black Rocket. For the fun of it and the smaller # of people on the boat. If you wanted to go out of WA I would suggest Neah Bay. I fished on a good boat up there and you also have the oppurtunity of going to Canadian waters. The last time we went the limit was 2 fish for the Canadian waters. Not sure of it now. The only drawback was that you had to go to BC to get your license. I went out on a charter out of Newport last year and got my fish but was also not told until we were on the boat that they OVERBOOK the trips, 18-20 people and only 12 fish at a time . Their reasoning is that most won't fish the whole time or get sick so why not load up the boat. It was rough that day so there were some chummers and others who just got tired. $150-200 for the day is about right.

Fishing on charter boats can be a little frustrating if you like to fish alone. On a charter you will be fishing with a bunch of new friends. It is impossible to overbook a charter because it's COI (certificate of Inspection) limits the number of passengers. some people don't like to fish with others. Since the number of halibut fishing days is limited, the number of people who want to go so high, the distance to the grounds so far and the cost of fuel so high, it would be silly to expect the operator of a charter to limit the number of fishermen.

All boats and captains fish differently. It is important to choose a captain who knows how to fish for halibut so you won't be waisting your time all day reeling up from the deep. You need to choose the right boat so that you can comfortably fish.

In some ports, the operators will load their boats to the maximum COI limit and then fish in shifts. This to me is not fair to the customer and only breeds discontent.

At Newport Tradewinds, the number of passengers is limited to what we can easily fish at one time. My boat is 55 foot and capible of carring 40 passengers but I only take 27 and have limited it to that for the simple reason that this is all I can fish at one time comfortably. Even then, many of my experienced passengers just enjoy the trip and sit back and watch to let the others catch their fish and limit and then there are fewer lines to contend with.

Andrea Kay Charters out of Tilamook. The skipper's name is Dick. His boat always outfishes everyone. It is a slow boat but is almost always the first one back. He only fishes 6 or 8. I have had nothing but great experiences with him. I think he charges $150.

2oz - I fished with Mike on the "Blitz" last year and he limited the boat on halibut and we got some other bottom fish as a bonus. Everyone went home with fish.

Did I mention he has fresh coffee on board and seasoned deck hands?

Good captain and he really knows how to find the fish, most important he runs a safe boat. The cost last year, if I remember correctly, was $150.

ATC, My comments were not directed at you. I have not had the oppurtunity to fish with you. From what I have heard and when I talked to you at the TA meeting in Newport I would have had a different experience on your boat. Let me rephrase my overbook comment. The boat was not over its COI. We had to fish in shifts and from my point of view if you book a trip you should be able to fish when you want. You pay full price not half. Yes it does breed miscontent. My post was not intended as an insult to you personally. I was just trying to inform 2oz on what I have experienced. So it was also my bad for not asking.

My last trip we ended up fishing in 2 shifts,
the wind was hitting us really hard and the
boat was slipping fast and you could only fish one side of the boat. While the fishers did there thing the non fishers held them in the boat.
Some times you just got to live with mother nature. we didn't limit but we ALL got fish and was happy that it wasn't a bust.
Think I'm going to look up Captain Mike this year.
