Has anyone tried to do any Squid Fishing off the mouth of the Columbia?

Halibut season is getting closer!

Troy,

You should talk with Dana about that - Probably like you I saw the Squid rigs in Englund Marine and wondered myself. Dana said he has sent boats out with the big crab lights and sat all night trying to attract them, but nada....

Check out the archives for the reports from the Swordfish Team last summer. You only have to go out about 130 miles, then you will find your boat surrounded by large squid at night, large enough that you don't want to fall in.

We were considerably closer in than 130 miles. The Humboldt squid were encountered on the frst night about 20 miles west of the seamount nicknamed '61 degrees' that is west of Depoe Bay.

'61 degrees' is at N44' 54.968" by W 124' 39.342"

20 miles west of there. I imagine they are all over from the Continental slope on out. '61 degrees' is a 140 fathom seamount right on that drop off. We found these beasts on the thermocline at 100 feet in 3000 feet of water and also right near the boat. They hit anything, literally. But it seemed they liked lights and glow in the dark.

Dunno where to find their smaller cousins.

Last July I was bottom fishing a few hundred yards off Cape Lookout, and I noticed lots of squid in the water. They were about 10 inches long overall. I've since read that squid spawn off Cape Lookout. I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was an old ODFW publication.

My friend caught one of those Humboldt squid at the rock pile while bottom fishing late last fall. Good thing we had kept up on the Swordfish adventures or we would have really been suprised. This one was about 25-30lbs (after it squirted out the water it was holding, with the water it was was around 50lbs).

There was a post last year on a Depoe Bay charter trip that went out at night and caught a bunch too. I can't remember the thread though.

So is this the kind they might serve up in a restaurant as calamari?

Don't know but I'd think that squid would be an excellent bait for Springers, Steelhead and Sturgeon and crab and tuna and................

It stays on a hook really well. I've used them with good success on salmon in the ocean.

Lepper, think like a surfer dude and say "tubular."

The innards come out real easy with the head & tentacles. On the big ones, it makes it a little easier to cut a slice of the "tail" end off to help push the innards out. So you're left with a nice tube of meat that you can slice into ringlets, or keep intact for a "steak."

Fresh squid is unbelievably good. The stuff you see in the stores is milky white. Fresh stuff (small size) is almost clear. Some folks would darn near kill for it. The big squid are a little tougher so pounding like an ab is usually done.

They were jigging them off the docks on Puget Sound north and south of Seattle, Dec. thru Feb...
If you ever give it a try....be forwarned you may be the only english speaking person on the dock.. But they do pretty well at night w/ big lights and squid jigs... These aren't the big-uns, so write it on your callendar for next year..

I am still in dry storage. Bot a small river bay boat for springers & Tillamook in fall. Probably won't bring my real boat down until late June or early July. Look forward to seeing you then.

Are you still in the water at Hammond?
Any crabbing or anything going on down there?

Tom, I moved over to Warrenton in Nov. but pulled the boat 3 weekends ago. Got the arch off getting repaired and painted, changing bellow, installing my fuel flow meter (NavMan), relocating antenna's fixing a couple of rain leaks, (so poor Lynn doesnt have to wake up cold and wet) getting outriggers adjusted for the upcoming tuna season and of course tons of wax and polish.
Crabbing is pretty slow now, Just want to get the boat back in the water for some springer action.
