Default New Boat? Hello from mark in Juneau

Hi guys & gals.....I'm staring out at the snow, in Juneau Alaska right now. Came up here to buy a particular boat.....went for the first sea trial today, cruising in a little snowstorm. Not sure if the deal is gonna go through at this time....will know by end of day tomorrow. Folks say it is a little wild flying in & out of here....I would agree! The weather was nice until I arrived....so of course they are blaming in on me & the Oregon weather curse.

Will report back later. See y'all........ Mark Mc

Hey Mark, It is snowing in Spokane today as well. However, I don't see a fishing fleet or the Red Dog Saloon! Hope the boat works out.

If you think the flight IN was interesting, wait 'til you fly OUT of Juneau. They will probably warn you to be ready for the dog-leg, so forewarned is forearmed, yes? No.

When you lift off you will usually begin a gentle turn toward the mountain on your right. You will think this isn't so bad, but you will notice that you are getting pretty dang close to the hillside. Especially in a jet. Especially in the low-lying clouds. You will want the pilot to notice. He usually does, and throttles back slightly; not enough to lose momentum, but enough to make you wonder why he's doing it.

Then all of a sudden, as if you were in some 737 dogfight, the plane will bank hard to the left, spin on its wingtip, and head back the way you came - all within the confines of the channel below. Pretty fun stuff. Makes liquor taste really good. Comforting even.

I suggest you buy the boat and sail home.

Good luck on your venture.

Skein

Not only is the takeoff worse than Lindberg Field in San Diego, Juneau is supposed to be a city that is posed to be buried by an avalanche if the snow pack on the hill gets too deep. So keep your head up.

Did you get to see the mythical flamingoes at the Federal Building? The Feds shipped the wrong bronze sculpture to Juneau. It was supposed to go to the Federal Building in Tallahassee. But the Alaskans being as crazy as they are said they would keep it as a token of what the Federal Government thought of them.

Hi y'all....I got back home real late last night. The deal fell through (I backed out of it)....I'll tell you about it later today....need to take care of some family stuff first.

Skein (& others) are right....major pucker factor flying in & out of there.

Juneau is a piece of cake, try Sitka for a real pucker. Ketchikan can be bad too, if the wind is right (wrong?). Kake has a ridge down wind of the airport that the planes have to dodge. If the plane is heavy, ie. overloaded :depressed: , the pilot has to bank hard and drop to pick up air speed, right at the water 300 feet down a cliff. I flew weekly (sometimes several times a week), from mid February to the end of October, in SE Alaska for over 4 years and I don't miss it, much. I usually felt safer in float planes.
Do they still do the banking and engine cutting on the way out of Juneau?
