Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I don't see anything about it on any news websites and the Newport Jetty webcam doesn't cover the south beach.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I left Newport around 3:00pm. There were flashing red lights and an ambulance out on the NP south jetty. Couldn't see anything within the jaws.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
The Cap Anne has run aground just south of the jetty. Whe was seen steaming up the coast from Seal Rock in 12 fathoms and went aground still under power. Spilled her load and finally is dead. One person was known to have been aboard and he has not been found. It appears he may have fallen overboard and the boat left him while he was crabbing. Working alone.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I just got back from Newport and saw the boat on the South side of the South Jetty. Two Coast Guard boats were out there plus the helicopter. The boat is beached and listing towards the Ocean. I heard that there was only one person on the boat. The helicopter went along the south of the beach and all (or it seams like all) Newport Fire Department were out there, too. I hope all is well with whoever was on the boat. Plz post any info.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I'm up early this morning and just heard on KATU that the operator was rescued clinging to a crab pot float. I hope the story was about this skipper!

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I was monitoring the scanner too. The operator was reportedly alone and was found alive after a lengthy time period clinging to debris. Last night he was in critical condition and transferred to a Portland area hospital via Lifeflight. I do not know what his condition is this morning. The boat was visible from the South Jetty in Newport and from the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
I hope he makes it. The ocean is pretty unforgiving, particularily this time of year.

O.k., now I don't feel as much remorse about shelling out 3 1/2 bills on a Rockit Suit! Now I just pray I won't ever have to "use" it for it's intended purpose!

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
NEWPORT, Ore. -- A Newport man who fell overboard off his 40-foot fishing boat Sunday survived six hours adrift in rough seas.
The Coast Guard rescued Scott Morales, 30, Sunday afternoon about six miles from where his crab boat, Cathan, ran aground.
(kgw.com Graphic)
Morales was clinging to two crab pots and wearing only a T-shirt, underwear and socks.
“He was not wearing a life jacket and spent nearly six hours in the frigid water,” said Coast Guard spokesperson Lt.j.g. Kenneth Eller.
Two HH-65 helicopters from Group/Air Station North Bend and two 47-foot motor lifeboats from Station Yaquina Bay were immediately launched to begin searching for Morales, Eller said.
Morales was conscious when the Coast Guard found him and he told rescuers he was the only person on board when the accident happened that morning in four- to six-foot surf. A helicopter airlifted him to a local hospital.
The accident is currently under investigation.
A person walking on the beach first tipped off the Coast Guard at about 1:30 p.m., Sunday, after spotting what they thought was a fishing vessel breaking up in the surf.

Man Survives Six Hours Out In The Ocean
TOOLS
Email this story to a friend
Printer-friendly Version
NEWPORT, ORE. - A man who fell overboard off a 40-foot fishing boat and survived six hours all alone out in the ocean is now talking about his harrowing experience.
Thirty-year-old Scott Morales of Newport was rescued by the Coast Guard yesterday afternoon, six hours after falling overboard and watching the crab boat he was on take off without him.
"I'm watching the boat drive away and then for a few seconds you are almost in dreamland. You are like, is this really happening? Yeah, you're really in the water and the boat is driving away and you're the only one (out there)," Morales told KATU News by telephone.
That is when his amazing story of survival begins, and how he nearly gave up on ever making it out of the ocean alive.
Just Trying To Keep Afloat
"I just started stripping my clothes. I kicked my boots off and I took my jacket off and I sat there for a second and got my bearings."
"I looked around to see if there was anybody around and there was a boat coming up right behind me. I started trying to swim toward its path, but it came up a little further and then turned around."
Morales then decided his best course of action would be to try to get something to keep him from going under water.
"I tried to swim for some buoys, but the current kept pulling me away. They just kept getting further and further away, so I just kind of floated down until I could find the next crab pot and grabbed onto that, but then the current was running so hard, it kept pulling me under."
"I knew I had to get the buoy off the line. I kept taking big breaths and going under the water and trying to get the buoy off the line. A couple of times it almost drowned me trying to get these buoys off, you know."
"At that point, I figured alive or dead, I'm not going to be lost out here. There's no way. If I'm going to die, they're going to find me, so I'm going to try to strap everything that floats to me."
"I knew that I wasn't going to be able to continue to swim under my own strength, so that's why I knew I needed the extra flotation."
"I had them stuffed in my underwear, I had them stuffed in my shirt, trying to tuck my shirt into my underwear so it would hold everything in ."
Hoping For A Rescue
"I saw a boat come by and I waved and waved and waved, but he never saw me. And that's when another squall came through."
"I thought, well I missed the one boat that has come by and I figured this is it because my legs were so cramped I couldn't kick anymore. I was down to dog paddling."
Finally, Morales says he spotted a helicopter.
"I knew that if I didn't get seen this time, that was it, because they are only going to make so many patterns in that search area and then they are going to move on to another area."
"So I had one more sweep to try to get them. I had the buoys under my arms, tucked under my armpits like water wings to try to keep afloat."
"I kept taking them out from under my arms because they were bright yellow and I would wave them in the air. Finally, I'm waving both of them with both my hands. I'm completely under water and waving the buoys out of the water."
Morales said the next thing he knew, the helicopter was above him and he knew his ordeal was finally going to be over.
"Oh man, instant relief, absolutely instant relief. I had pretty much accepted my fate."
"My two worst fears in the world are drowning and freezing to death and I thought I was going to both in the same day."
Morales says he is suffering from hypothermia, but expects to be released from the hospital today.

My thoughts exactly Wet Fly. You try and put yourself in his situation and wonder where he got the fortitude to hang in there like he did, especially the way he adjusted to his situation.
Talk about a will to live

I think he did a great job of surviving. So much of it is mental and he did a great job keeping his instincts and in not giving up!

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
What was the water temp?? 44 or so? This has got to be a near recored for cold water survival. This man has taught us all to think on our feet--or waterwings, as it were...
Kujo has offered us all the chance to learn cold water survival techniques. They don't all require a Rocketware Drysuit (though they are highly recommended!!!).
My feeling is that everyone who reads this article should reasess there gumption in the light of this young mans survival. Only a miracle, and a hell of a layer of fat (I'd be willing to bet) saved this man from a fate that none of us would ever want to comprehend.
I'm equpped (6'3 245) but I'll be ordering a drysuit from Kim soon.
Miracle people--miracle....
What is Hypothermia?
Hypothermia is subnormal temperature within the central body. When a person is immersed in cold water, the skin and nearby tissues cool very fast. However, it may take 10 to 15 minutes. before the temperature of the heart and brain starts to drop. When the core temperature drops below 90° F serious complications begin to develop. Death may occur at about 80° F; however, a person may drown at a higher temperature due to loss of consciousness or inability to use the arms and legs.
How Long can I Survive in Cold Water?
Survival in cold water depends on many factors. The temperature of the water is only one. Others include body size, fat, and activity in the water. Large people cool slower than small people. Fat people cool slower that thin people. Children cool faster than adults.
By swimming or treading water, a person will cool about 35 percent faster than if remaining still. Down-proofing - the technique of staying afloat, facedown, with lungs full of air, and raising the head every 10 to 15 seconds for a breath- conserves energy, but also results in rapid heat loss through the head and neck. This technique reduces survival time by nearly one-half in cold water.
An average person, wearing light clothing and a personal floatation device (PFD), may survive 2 1/2 to 3 hours in 50° F water by remaining still. This survival time can be increased considerably by getting as far out of the water as possible and covering the head. Getting into or onto anything that floats can save a life.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I'm so tickled about his rescue and recovery, that I'm shakin'. So many young guys have lost it while working a life they love. This morning I heard he had been rescued but had not heard about his survival. THANK GOD!! Losing a boat is nothing. Losing fishing gear.....nothing! Thank God he made it!!!! I'm so tickled I could cry!!!!

I can relate after being knocked off a burning sailboat 20 miles off cape foulweather. I had a dry suit on so I didn't have the same death defying experience, but I knew without the CG helo I was in for a LONG float.

I bought myself and my wife a rockit suit last year and almost always wear mine while at sea.
I hope the skipper pulls through. It takes a lot to survive 6 hours in the cold rough sea.

"Morales was clinging to two crab pots and wearing only a T-shirt, underwear and socks."
Sounds like maybe he was doing a night check? Or... maybe he's a sleepwalker (scary thought for a fisherman). My nephew used to go outside and wonder around the yard in his sleep. His folks had to go steer him back in the house on several occasions.
Glad they found him alive. Sounds like he was very lucky.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I'm thinking maybe he ditched his pants and other clothes, since they probably water-logged and would've made it difficult or impossible to stay afloat? I'm not a "salty-dog" can I still add that input?

Can you imagine the feeling of being dumped into the drink and watching your boat motor away? Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about that. Glad all turned out well.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I saw this guy on the news last night. He was laying there in a hospital bed with a big grin and loving life, joking with the reporter. I suppose it is all good after the helicopter plucked you out of the water.
They said he was 6'-6" and weighed in at 350 which probably helped him. They also reported the water temp at 50 degrees.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I have been following the story since it was posted about the ghost ship. What an absolutly incredible story. I can't imagine hitting the water and seeing your boat motoring away. I am so happy with the outcome. I even bet the coast guard was tickled to pink when they saw him waving those floats in the air.
On the subject of cold water survival, doesn't a submersible radio strapped to the rocket suit make the best sence? That way it would make it easier for the coasties or passing ships to find you.

How are ya doing?? Good to hear from you.
As a former Paramedic I know what he endured,he had to be a rather large fellow to survive so long. I'll bet I could make it 5 1/2 hours dangit, though I have no desire to find out anytime soon!!!!!!

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
Due to laws regarding patient privacy I am restricted in how much I can say here, so please don't ask.
What I will say is that this man endured something that very few people could possibly survive through. 6hrs in 50 degree water is not something even an athlete could normally survive.
I commend both him and the Coast Guard, and all involved in his search and rescue.

Incredible! I read this yesterday and STILL have goose bumps! What a tale of survival and awesome thinking! for all the rescuers and medical personnel who pulled him through what had to be the most harrowing experience of Mr. Morales' life.

Re: Beached boat south of south jetty?
I have a serious problem with this whole story. Now, don't get me wrong,
I'm happy he survived and seems to be in good health/spirits, but ...
I was all excited when I read the story. When I got home the story was
the lead item on the evening news. I had started to relate the story to
my sweety just before the news story came on over the air. My wife *totally*
freaked out! I thought maybe she was going to make me sell the boat, or
at least make me take somebody else out with me *every* time I went fishing!
Then I reminded her about all the life insurance I carry on myself ...
