Question ??

when do you more experienced bassers start going for bass? what do they hit? I know I would have to fish it slow but i need some ideas for lures?

Ive already been out twice this year. Chances are slim that you with get even a bite, but if you do its gonna be a large female. Ive heard all the craze about lipless cranks but thats not my style. Ive got four poles I take with me and I almost always have a big profile jig, a single blade spinnerbait for slow rolling or even jigging on the bottom, a small crankbait that digs into the bottom, and ALWAYS have a lizard on. Early Spring is the time to be fishing a lizard. My secret:garlic smelly jelly.

For me it depends on weather, how well the springer bite is...or isn't, and 50F water.
Other people wait until the cotton woods bloom. I can't stand waiting until then.
But seriously it really boils down to time availability and weather....hard to sit out a beautiful spring day, even if the bite is slow. The dog just wouldn't forgive me.

As soon as the coyotes have pups....it's time for bass.

If you watch the weather look for a couple days of mid50 temps and the activity of the fish will really increase. Last year this time we had a couple nice days and a buddy and I went out and stuck 13 fish, with a 5 fish limit of 20lbs, its never too early...good luck

Mr6lbR you are missing out if you dont fish a trap in the cold. They are good baits to get a reaction and you can cover water extremely fast compared to a lizard don't get me wrong a lizard is killer in the spring/winter but you sell yourself short if you dont have a lipless crank handy.

So Ive heard. I tend to fish my strengths, and a rattle trap just aint my bag. Maybe I should spend a season trying it out. Just dont feel too confident with it.

I didn't either when I started but they saved us from a horrible tournament picking up 3 of our four fish in 44 degree water a few years back. I fished traps alot last year and did really well its just one of those things you have to practice with. I like throwing them on braid when I can because the key is getting it stuck in the grass and ripping it free they hit it right after it breaks loose 9 times out of 10.

Just another trick to add to the bag. I'll give it a whirl this season.

Get out there now.. the rattle trap bite should be on.. also look for hard bottom in deeper holes.. slowly probe a jig through that and you might have a chance at a fish of a life time
