Default A few nearshore bottomfish ?'s out of NP

Man, it seems like forever since I have posted anything on the "Dogs". After a superb offshore Salmon season came to a close last year, I have been putting a lot of time in chasing sturgeon but can't seem to fill the void.

Are those near shore rock fish out of Newport biting yet? I would like to give it a spin when the water will let my sled out safely. You guys have any good GPS spots to try just south of Yaquina Bay? I always nailed bottomfish at the pile but will probably just hang around the jetties to start with this year. We found a couple of good areas last year about two miles south of the second green can. I always thought if you trolled a curly tail grub on a jighead and a shrimp fly and headed South once you got to the second green can, you should be able to locate schooling sea bass in no time.

We found one area that always kicked out limits of sea bass but you had to be pretty careful. The area was 45 feet deep and then came up to like 12 to 15 feet deep. Everyime you drifted where it rose up to 12 feet you would get a fish on every rod that was in the water. On about the fifth drift I noticed I was about to get hit with a 8 to 9 foot swell that was just starting to show signs of breaking water on the top. I jammed the throttle to spin my boat around and took two pretty good swells. The swells were only big in that area that the bottom came up to 12 feet and luckily it was only two swells that were big. All the other swells were 3 to maybe 4 feet. We stayed clear of that area after that but I would like to get back to that spot on a day when the swells were almost non existant.

I can't wait till the ocean lays down and I look forward to meeting some more of you guys and gals this year

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Tackelbuster, it sounds like you were fishing right on top of N. Pinnacle. Most days you can fish it, but if there is any possiblity of a swell of 8' or more, stay off it!

South of Newport there are three spots that can be dangerous. South Reef, N. Pinnacle and Johnson Rock. Anytime there is an 8' foot swell or more they can be dangerous. I don't have the exact numbers with me now, but if you want, I'll get them for you tomorrow and post them.

Tacklebuster,

If ATC gets busy and can't get you the numbers, I have them for the same spots he has warned you about. You definately want to stay off of those numbers if it is rolling very much at all. The water rolls over the top of them pretty hard if there is much of a swell at all.

Let me know. SD

Thanks Captain Mike and SD, sounds like I need to stay away from those areas. I would like those numbers if at all possible.

Great bit of advice cappytan Mike!

That is the same type of warning I attempted to give fishing some areas south of Dopey Bay on that Depoe Bay small boat bottom fish thread I posted a couple weeks ago.
Like Morrocco and other areas in the proxcimity of Gull Rock.
