Mississippi Hog Hunt
This was my Mississippi Hog Hunt. My friend Jimmy Gibbs and I were picking up two Jagd Terrier pups from our friend Veterinary DR Pat Larkin in Bude, MS. We asked if we could hunt some hogs while picking up the pups and Pat said “yes, come on out, we’ll take care of ya’ll”.
We set out Friday February 6th at 6:00 am PST for Jackson MS. We had a slight delay, because Jimmy had a 22. shell in his bag that he didn’t know was there and the security at PDX had to do a major write up. It was kind of funny. I was getting my shoes back on and the security guard is telling Jimmy to stand right there and don’t move. Fortunately, the security gal that shook Jimmy down was a competition clay shooter and her husband bow hunts. After about 15 minutes, the paper work was complete and we were on our way.
We arrived in Jackson MS at 1:30 pm CST, hit the Bass Pro Shops, and then headed to our destination in Bude, MS.
We were greeted by our friend, Jagd breeder, and Veterinary DR Pat Larkin. After getting settled in a brand new log cabin that Pat arranged for us, we went to Pat’s house for dinner. Pat and his wife laid out the spread. Wild Boar chops, venison, boar sausage, and my favorite dish of the night, squirrel gumbo. We had all the trimmings including home made biscuits and pound cake.
After dinner, we went to another dog mans house and visited for awhile and then headed back to get some much needed sleep. I set my alarm for 4:30 am because Pat would be there at 5:00 am to pick us up. However, at 1:00 am CST my phone went off. It was my friend Pete. I woke up to answer it, went in the bathroom and when I came out Jimmy was all dressed and ready to go hog hunting. I apologized to Jimmy and told him to go back to bed. He thought when the phone rang it was the alarm clock and time to get up, but it was a false alarm, sorry Jimmy.
Saturday morning at 4:30 the alarm sounds this time for real.
At 5:00 am, Pat and his son Thomas arrived to pick us up. We head out and meet several guys including Howard, an outfitter friend of Pats, which will be on Mossy Oak TV this summer guiding a deer hunt.
Here are some pictures with descriptions.
After arriving to the hunting area, everyone loaded their dogs in cages on trailers towed by four wheelers. We drove to a bait pile and checked for sign. Here is a picture of some of the vehicles with the dog trailers waiting for the high sign to release some dogs:
After locating sign at the bait pile, several Jagd Terriers were released with one Catahoula Cur dog. After about 3 or 4 minutes, we heard the dogs baying a pig, so we ran toward the dogs. When we were within about 75 yards or so, we released 3 Pit Bulls, and within a few seconds they caught the 150lb Boar Hog. Here are 3 Jagds and 3 Pits on the boar:
Another shot of Jagds and boar:
This is me and the Boar that the dogs caught. The guys out there hobble the hog’s legs, transport home, and then dispatch for slaughter.
We stopped at a gas station deli to grab some fried chicken and this was our cashier that apparently takes great pride in dressing up for work and was kind enough to pose for a picture. I just had too:
This photo includes back row Trent, DR Pat Larkin, his dad DR Larkin, middle row me, Scooter, Jimmy, front row the boys Thomas and Trent’s son, and the days catch, literally.
Me and Jimmy:
Hogs Hanging:
The Jagd pups and their momma.
After the guys dispatched the hogs, they started skinning, so Jimmy and I went back to the cabin for a shower and to pack up then over to Pat’s clinic to pick out our puppies. After saying our good buys and many thanks for the wonderful time and hospitality, we went and got a room in Jackson, so we wouldn’t have to drive an hour and a half in the morning.
Sunday Feb. 8th, we got to the Jackson airport at 4:00 am and handed the pups off to the airline. I went through the security line first with no problem. As I got my shoes on, I look up to see Jimmy being stopped by security, again. They told him to wait a minute, because they had to run his shoes back through the X-ray machine. This time is was for the mud on his boots, they had to make sure it wasn’t some kind of explosive. Jimmy just looked at me and said, "do I have a guilty look on my face or something?".
Although Jimmy can’t seem to get through a security check point with out causing some sort of delay LMAO, I really enjoyed him as a travel companion. He was up beat and fun to be around. I don’t know that he can say the same for me though LOL.
We arrived back in Portland at 11:00 am safe and sound with the pups.
It was a bonzai trip that I would love to do again. Pat and his friends could not have shown us a better time. It was an incredible experience and the epitome of Southern Hospitality.

I always worry about this and carefully check my pack before flying. Glad to see security didn't freak out about it.
As for the trip, looks like a good time.

Re: Mississippi Hog Hunt
Yeah, sounds like a real cool trip! Cool hogs!
Those pesky 22 shells.
The folks up at the Canadian border got the opprotunity to clean my truck up for me once too.
At least he didn't have to plead guilty to smuggling hollow points and high cap mags.

Blood Trailing, hunting coon, bobcat, nutria, pigs, badger, squirrels, opossum, or whatever they decide to chase that is legal.
They are a very versatile dog that has a good nose and a lot of grit but only weigh 15 to 25 lbs. A lot of guys are switching from big dogs to these little guys with a big dog or two in the pack.
Here is a picture of a Nutria he caught above ground. Most of the nutes we catch are below ground. The dogs actually go under ground and we have a device attached to their collar to locate where they are underground.

Gus,
I could shoot you a short video, but I didn't take any other pictures than the ones you see, just did short video clips.

Re: Mississippi Hog Hunt
Those dogs just tear em up! Many years ago, when we still had hound/bear seasons, my brother in law had one along with a couple of his buddys. The accidental breeding of that dog and his beagle produced the best rabbit dog I have ever seen. Put all 4 of my beagles to shame.
Like the pics.

Some do some don't. There is an ol'boy down on the South Coast that has a pack and his bark on track and at the tree.
My scruff dog will bark when he gets a whiff, but if he is just sniffing he isn't saying a word.
I am very green at this and just learning myself, but if you are interested in Jagds, I can get you hooked up with all of the websites and people to keep you busy for a solid month LOL.

The guy I got my first 2 from lives in CA and uses them for Bear, Bobcat, Hogs, and squirrels. He treed 2 bob cats last week and let them go.
Here is a bobcat and a picture of a 4 month old jagd at the tree. I have a full brother from a previous litter and the littermate to this pup.
