Bird Hunting..
I'm new to Oregon, having moved from New Hampshire in October.
I was an avid bird (pheasant and grouse) hunter in NH. I currently live near Beaverton/hillsboro (Rock Creek to be exact). i've been told that bird hunting basically doesnt exist west of the cascades? Is that true.
Im not much into hunting ducks or geese...
Thanks

Re: Bird Hunting..
What you heard is pretty much true. Get to know the east side of the state.

Re: Bird Hunting..
Yes, that's pretty true. However there are a few places that plant birds (pheasants) if your into that sort of thing. Its always an option and a good way to get out without driving way over east.
oh and there are quite a few grouse!

Re: Bird Hunting..
There is definitely some bird hunting on the westside, mainly grouse. Down here, there are quite a few mountain quail if you get in the right spot also.

You will find more grouse opportunities than pheasants on the westside.
For grouse we have two kinds, ruff and blues.

Snipe! Sportty little rascals, but a far cry as table fare from most game birds. Doves and pigeons early season.
Check out " Wing Shooting Oregon" for some really good general tips on all our avian quarry. Welcome. What do you think so far?

Re: Bird Hunting..
Not true! Lots of quail and grouse hunting opportunities in the Coast Range. It's thick cover, you need a dog.

Pheasant is really all east of the Cascades. As for grouse (I lived in the midwest) it isn't at all like it is in NH. These aren't hardwoods in Oregon. The hardwoods are so fun to hunt grouse in. To compare for out here imagine the worse maple vine thicket you have ever gotten stuck in and then multiple by a factor 10 for hundreds of square miles, that gives ya an idea what the Oregon Coast would be like. Not for me.
